... Holy crap I just stumbled across the knowledge that the latest big funnymunny craze was sparked off by the stupidest person on the planet having a temper tantrum an absolutely no conception whatsoever of how video games work. polygon.com/22709126/ether…
So as a quick disclaimer, this has nothing at all to do with how this turducken of scams has actually played out since, where someone charges you a ton of money for a tinyurl but the tinyurl goes in the funnymunny registry so we have to burn down another rain forest to note it...
But apparently, this is the thought process involved in what the real vision was:
- A balance patch to World of Warcraft changed how this guy's favorite ability worked (and honestly I'm not even going to call it a nerf, it was changing a self-healing spell so it doesn't pull down
the biggest monster in the area to finish off your already hurt character, so I assume this guy was playing an MMO totally solo).
- This adult baby threw a fit over this, and concluded that the only possible reason this change was made is because the designers of the game are big
meanies who intentionally decided to screw him over (again, by making it so that playing the class where you're supposed to summon monsters to kill things do less direct damage, thwarting what I have to assume was his strategy of just never learning to play his class and only
fighting things too under-leveled for him to be damaging him in the first place).
- He then decided that said big dumb meanies shouldn't have the ability to tweak gameplay like that, and rather than just switch over to playing some other game that doesn't have active support like
that, for which I must stress one of his options is LITERALLY A VERSION OF THAT SAME GAME the developers set up extra servers for with 2 decades of balance patches rolled back PRECISELY to pacify this exact sort of guy whining about every minor tweak like that, what he wanted was
- A new system, wherein rather than employ game designers to, you know, design and maintain this specific one of the two branches of this game he has a problem with, they instead I guess just... let anyone who has the coding skills and desire to do so write individual modules for
equipment and character abilities, with absolutely no oversight or quality control, and submit them through some sort of automated process to be integrated into the game, with absolutely no option to ever remove them or tweak them if they think better of it or misplace a decimal.
- And then I guess also retroactively put all current game data (wait, no! NOT current! It must explicitly be version 3.0.9, from February, NOT April of 2009, the exact moment when he thinks the game was perfect, despite what I assume to be the tweak he actually means being from
either version 4.0.3a or something he just completely imagined because version 3.0.2 changed the visual) and I guess also freeze the state of class structuring to prevent moving anything around to retroactively unspill his milk.
- To circumvent the obvious problem of how he would
get these absolutely un-nerf-able weapons and abilities, rather than being earned in-game, they would be purchasable... using a special currency that he also personally created, rather than actual money, by just copying preexisting funnymunny technology. That way those mean game
devs are totally cut out of the equation.
Again, it's just STUNNING.
He of course didn't actually do this, because that's just fundamentally not how programming, data structures, game design, networking, or basic quality control work, and instead settled for tinyurls that could
I guess in theory be pointed at like, an old screenshot of a stat breakdown, or the wiki I spent all that time trying to point out the specific ridiculousness of before realizing just now he's also apparently confusing the syphon life TALENT with the drain life SPELL, which was
folded in as a rider effect on an existing damage over time ability rather than a whole separate thing to activate so I guess he was actually mad about not having to spend as much MP?
Anyway, if he HAD actually created this ridiculous framework, there would be no reason at all
the company behind the game to actually implement it, because again, he had no relationship with them beyond apparently playing their game rather poorly, and his STATED GOAL is to screw them out of their revenue source here.
And you know, had that not all been true, rather than
keep his experience playing the game the same it would... completely destroy the game in however much time it took for someone to reverse-engineer the engine enough to implement a "prevent anything bad from ever happening to me and kill everything else on the server constantly"
always-on passive ability, after first heavily wounding the game as 10 minutes after implementation less creative people learned the hard way if damage values are signed in the code as they hastily tried to give themselves infinite damage swords.
Also someone is already replying
to this thread with the interesting bit of trivia from recent general news on this subject that some other idiot actually DID try to make a new game using a SLIGHTLY more reasonable variation of this astoundingly stupid idea, with predictable results:
... and come to think of it none of this is even getting into the specific hell that is the whole "personal ownership" angle of the original unworkable plan meaning technically it isn't even that "I want this version of this class ability preserved in amber for all time" it's "my
personal instance of this ability," which also can be "sold" to someone else I guess in exchange for the fake money this guy started minting on his own as part of this whole boondoggle. So, even if A- It was actually possible to implement this, B- someone actually wanted to, AND
C- somehow the entire population of the world embraced a spirit of fairness and mutually agreed upon standard of game balance such that no one immediately broke everything, AND D- nobody accidentally broke everything with an oversight in this no-correcting-mistakes environment...
the necessary data structuring just in managing personal character data and having it interact with the rest of the game would be bloated to hell, even BEFORE introducing the idea of this all piggybacking off of funnymunny intentionally-ever-bloating ledgers and it would not run.
Anyway how wild is it that between this and this bylinetimes.com/2019/10/02/mon… we literally have two overlapping extinction-level-threats within a decade stemming from people sucking at World of Warcraft and not wanting to actually learn how to play it properly?

It's really easy to make fun of blithering idiots with fantasies about colonizing other planets and hand-waving away insurmountable problems they don't actually have a solution for. It's also entertaining so keep it up.
But it's also easy and fun to pick on them for the obvious
flaws they've thought way too much about.
Like the basic fact that literally the only reason anyone has ever had or ever will have to set up a colony is to get access to the sort of cheap labor you can only get by enslaving or at least thoroughly exploiting native people you're
very cool with denying basic human rights for and killing now and then. The colony itself you see only has value because it's in a place remote enough that people with morals and legal jurisdiction and such can't see what you're doing and/or can't easily stop you from doing it.
It's significant because it belongs to:
A- Someone I care deeply about
and
B- Someone who makes incredibly rad game dev middleware and music and such that subscribers get all of at no extra cost if I recall properly.
The production of said things is currently stalled out because she went heavily into debt on a new computer, sold the old one to help cover that, and then the new one proved to have a broken everything (video card, monitor, fans, USB ports) and funnymunny mines ruined the market.
So if, say, a whole bunch of people reading this were to kick in a bit of that patreon cash to her, even if just for like a month or two, you'd first off get access to a lot of currently existing rad stuff, and also help jump start her out of this debt hole to get back to work.
This (and the rest of the thread) is a point I see brought up very often (because it is plainly true and basically impossible not to observe), but I feel like people (as I'm seeing in the comments of this thread) really drop the ball on where all this externalized self-loathing
Way too often, people look at these pathetic wretches and go, "ah, I know why they seem to hate everything about being a woman! They're all actually trans men in denial!"
So, first of all, this is one of those things where I think we all learned the hard way that
things go really badly when you make the wild claim that all the people who hate group X are secretly members of it. This happened with being gay for a good long while, and it lead to a lot of "allies" making shitty gay jokes about right-wing lawmakers and religious cranks, and
hatemongering go completely unchecked, their straw men get to speak on behalf of all trans people.
The narrative being pushed here, which based on celebrity reactions is a pretty good recruitment tool, is that trans women are out in force trying to compel everyone to never use
the word "woman" again.
As people keep pointing out, that's completely ridiculous, clearly not happening, not something we'd be in a position to do, something that in fact goes very much against our collective interests, and is of course projection, because this is a hate group
Like aside from the general Libertarian paint-huffing and thinking the company is based in Wisconsin somehow, there's really not a whole lot to sell.
"Name recognition" does nothing, because 3rd parties are allowed, encouraged even, to slap that name on all their stuff...
the "more business-friendly labor market" being speculated about here simply does not exist. It's a weird niche little industry here. Everyone with the actual qualifications to do what the new union here does either currently works at Paizo, or are already pretty comfortably
Seeing a few people on the ol' TL today wasting their time trying to have reasoned arguments with anti-vaxxers. I still maintain that the best response to bad-faith arguments is never to engage, but should you insist on doing so, I highly recommend you ignore their talking points
and instead lead with an argument phrased something like this:
IS THE WIDDLE CRYBABY SCARED OF A TINY LITTLE NEEDLE? WAAAAAAAH! WAAAAAAAAAH! I DON'T WANT AN OUCHY FROM A TEENY LITTLE POINTY! I NEED EVERYONE TO LET ME JUST HIDE UNDER MY BLANKIE AND PRETEND NOTHING'S WRONG! WAH!
Should the person in question attempt some manner of counter-argument, you might then respond with something like:
WAH! WAH! THE WIDDLE CRYBABY CAN'T HANDLE A WIDDLE POKE YOU CAN BARELY FEEL! WAH!
And I want to stress that I am actually being completely serious with this advice
