A possibility:

The GOP candidates tear themselves apart in the primaries, bruise each other, and spend their money.

Then @staceyabrams (who spent the past few years registering new voters) wins.

Nearly 1.3 million new voters have registered in Georgia since her last run for governor in 2018.

That didn't happen by itself.
She made it happen.
I'm trying to (subtly) point out what can work instead of harping on what doesn't work (and shouldn't work in a democracy).

Also, Doom Twitter has had an effect on me.

Guess what people usually say the moment I say "elections matter."

BUT WHAT ABOUT...
.@staceyabrams doesn't get mired in "what about."

She does the work.

Before the 2020 elections when much of Left Doom Twitter assured me that the GA voting machines could be easily hacked (they've now moved the goalposts) I asked why, if true, Stacey Abrams never mentioned it.
The problem is that the work to save democracy is mundane and tedious. Unless you register people by the thousands, you don't get lots of glory.

Here's my one-line answer when people say, "The United States is not a democracy, it's a constitutional republic."

Me: "A constitutional republic is a form of democracy. See this definition: definitions.uslegal.com/l/liberal-demo…

If they say . . .
If they say: "The United States was not founded as a democracy," I say, "That's because we had legalized slavery."
Ha! I usually ignore the comment myself because you know exactly who you are dealing with. They're the same people who think the IRS and the SEC are unconstitutional.

But people feel better when they know how to answer.

Listening now: The DOJ is suing Texas under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act
This follows last month's lawsuit against Texas.

"We carefully assessed the facts and laws before bringing this action."

"Texas's 2021 violates Section 2 of the voting rights act."
They believe they can prove that the redistricting was done with discriminatory intent.

The complaint will prohibit Texas from conducting elections under this redistricting plan.

If democracy survives, it will be because enough people are willing to do the work.

If it doesn't survive, I suspect it will be a combination of these factors:

🔹People sat back and expected or demanded [fill in the blank] to fix the problem.

🔹The opponents of autocracy formed a circular firing squad and blamed each other.

🔹Enough of the people opposed to autocracy ignore or minimize facts.

🔹Enough people spend the next year bashing Democrats.

Fact: The only thing standing between us and another Trump-style administration is the Democratic Party.

One way to counter the anti-Merrick Garland rage is with facts (here is how complex investigations work, here's the evidence we have of what is happening).

Another way perhaps is to ask: If a president removed an AG because of a pressure campaign by political partisans. . .

. . . who are demanding specific prosecutions, wouldn't that itself be politicizing the DOJ, which is exactly what Barr and Trump tried to do, which we all agreed was destructive to democracy?

Garland continually answers his critics by saying "They will follow the facts."

One of the pillars of democracy is an independent prosecutor. In an autocracy, the autocrat decides. In an era of mob rule (i.e. lynchings) the mob decides.

As our democracy is set up, the prosecutor decides.

Here is what people are having a hard time accepting:

The Republicans are knowingly and actively shielding and supporting liars and lawbreakers because they want to destroy. The lies and lawbreaking are intended to destroy.

If anyone made these promises, that person lied⤵️

It seems to me that this is based on a theory that goes like this: We had a lovely democracy and then along came the lawbreaking Republicans. Because they are breaking laws, we can solve the problem through the criminal justice system.

2/
Two things are happening right now on left media:

(1) People misunderstand the lies and lawbreaking on the right.

(2) People tell their own lies (what I've been calling rage-inducing simplifications) based on a faulty view of history and the nature of the problem.
