Used Porsche and Audi race cars in the 80's as PDK
2002 VW introduces DSG to the world with a wet clutch (Clutches immersed in oil) 6AMT in the R32
2008 VW with the 1st dry clutch DSG. compact and lighter for smaller cars
The DSG GB is basically 2 gearboxes in 1.
2 clutch sets (K1, K2)
2 drive shafts (S1, S2)
2 gear sets (GO. GE)
1 clutch kit and drive shaft drives the even number gear set, while the other drives odd number set.
The mechatronics unit controls everything the GB does.
When in G1, the gb engages G2 but keeps K2 open. Upon instruction, K2 closes to engage G2 while K1 opens and GO engages G3. This greatly reduces shifting times with some systems able to shift gears in 0.01sec in stock set ups and half that when tuned.
The clutch sets have many disks which provides a big friction area allowing high torque applications. A wet clutch DSG in a golf GTI can take >450NM stock, and up to 700NM+ when tuned without hardware change.
It also allows aggressive tunes for acceleration and launching, making it one of the most enjoyable and desirable GBs.
Cars with DSG include:
VW
S- Tronic (Audi)
GTR R35 gearbox
SST in the Evo X
and the holy grail of GBs, the PDK gearbox found in fast Porsches.
The 2 main categories are wet clutch and dry clutch, though some minor details may vary b2in brands & generations.
Wet clutch is used for high power/torque applications such as racing, towing and vans. LHS
Dry clutch is used for low torque applications in small light cars. RHS
Pros:
Power!!!! (Wet clutch)
Unrivalled shift speed
Robust (wet clutch)
Easy maintenance (wet clutch)
Fuel efficiency
Offers the pros of manual and auto transmissions, while avoiding most cons of both
Cons:
Needs good cooling
Clutch wear (dry clutch)
Sensitive to heat and strain ( dry clutch)
Frequent service ( dry clutch)
Mechatronics prone to failure (dry clutch)
Need high level skills to work on
Most complaints about DSG within VAG come from the dry clutch units
Verdict:
No other GB offers the combination of torque, shift speed, smoothness, intelligence, flexibility and robustness that the DSG does.
Keep it wet clutch for more peace of mind
Tune it and have fun burning rubber every day

CVT means Continuously Variable transmission, since gear ratios can be varied continuously and in infinitely small steps as opposed to conventional gearboxes which have 3/4/5/6 ratios (steps)
Advantages:
Compact
Lighter
Smoother
More fuel efficient
as compared to other GBs. Best suited for light cars, light loads and city driving
Cons:
Needs good cooling
Slow picking
Can not be used for heavy torque applications such towing and racing
Needs service (CVT fluid change)
Expensive to replace
Car warning lights appear on your dash or infontainment system when something is not right with your car. The number and degree of component monitoring differs from car to car, but youll generally have these lights.
If your car throws a light not covered above, you can google your particular model dashboard lights.
In addition to the light meaning, color coding is also important when making decisions regarding a light.
Red light means STOP the vehicle needs immediate technical attention
If you do not have the wherewithal solve it yourself, please seek help. You should not drive a car with a red light on, especially if it is accompanied by a beeping sound.
Yellow and amber: car needs technical attention, but may still drive. the darker the color, the more urgent
