Timing of job interviews. The other day I saw on hacker news: a post from tanayagrawal (.substack .com)
“Your interview success can depend on how you schedule your interviews. Here’s how”
👇
Main points made:
- Schedule the interviews in blocks, and try to not hit a time right before/after holidays and long breaks
- Especially this one “I recommend scheduling interviews between 9 AM — 1 PM.”
- The time of the day also plays a role: theguardian.com/law/2011/apr/1…
But does it really matter?
From my experience as a person on the other end, I’d say those factors don’t play big role.
Why?
You don't know where in the process you are. could be the first person in line (the forget you). Or the last: someone else took the job already.
I think, those factors should not bother you too much. Get the basics right. The #paretoprinciple
- Have good camera setup - most western people get this right. Also: don’t blur your background (my personal pet peeve)
- Have good sound. Many people don’t get this right at all.
There’s a reason I am using my podcasting mic even for day to day calls, anything that’s more important than a standup meeting.
- Be relaxed and confident. Have eaten before you take the interview, and make sure it’s not in your night ( important for people in far time zones)
And then in the end: most factors you cannot influence at all. If you are even a fit. Or if someone actually likes you.
The time is better spent getting on more interviews.
More interviews = better jobs
To the #HumanResources people: What factors do you think are important?
