🚨🚨 BBC Health Correspondent “The majority of those in intensive care are unvaxxed”

FACT CHECK

➡️ False - The latest estimates show that in November around 48% of patients in ICU were unvaccinated.

Another person working within the media who is putting out misinformation
The 48% number comes from a report from the Intensive Care National Audit & Research Centre.

I have corrected them on this.
My blog written a few weeks ago goes into more detail on the stats around this area. I will update with the 48% number.

Most people are vaccinated in the population so having large numbers vaccinated in hospital not surprising.

If you compare 2 people who are similar with one vaccinated and one unvaccinated the data does show you are more likely to be admitted if catching Covid and unvaccinated - although this depends on previous infection.
The journalist has now deleted the information.

Nadine is using data on 154 patients over 5 months.

It is true that 91% of patients requiring Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Severe Respiratory Failure were unvaccinated - this was 141 people.

Over the same period, 100,000 patients were admitted to hospital with Covid
I would hardly say quoting this most extreme care is representative of the likely outcome for patients.

She is basing her claims on 0.14% of the population admitted to hospital with Covid and ignoring the other 99.86%.
Over the same period there were 4.2 million Covid cases identified through testing (overall there would have been more but not tested).

So the basis of her claims is on 0.0033% of the cases identified.

🚨🚨 #Covid cases are up 12% week on week across the UK. Testing is also up 12% week on week.

As with last year, there is increased testing around the festive period.

Across the countries case up 38% in Scotland, 12% in England, down 2% in Wales and down 8% in N.Ireland. Image
Testing in the UK is heading towards record levels with on average 1.2 million per day being tested over the past week.

More testing as people have festive parties and gatherings may pick up more cases without symptoms. Image
Within England, cases are only rising among people aged 20 to 49.

For those most vulnerable cases are flat or down. We have even seen a fall week on week among children aged 10 to 14. Image

She has form of repeating this information and I have asked her last week to clarify her source.

She has continued to ignore me.
The UKHSA report published last Friday indicates for the most recent data around 40% of patients admitted to hospital were unvaccinated.

Remember not all admissions are because of Covid, around 1 in 4 are not.

Some may also catch in hospital

Shocking misrepresentation of the data on @c4news
In the past week, we have already had BBC and ITV main news show outlets broadcasting information not supported by the facts, with Sky News having a contributor talking nonsense on stats in Wales.

Channel 4 gives us a full house across the mainstream media.
