SEO is a super reliable marketing channel.

It has helped our startup hit $3 million revenues by driving 300k monthly traffic.

Today, I'll share a mini-course in SEO:

1. Understand SEO using the analogy of a library
2. 21 lessons we learnt
3. Our secret playbook

Thread 🧵
1/ SEO in Simple Speak

SEO intimidates so many, but frankly the concept is quite simple.

So, to make it an absolute breeze to understand, I've explained it in 9 tweets using the analogy of a library.

Here you go!

2/ 21 lessons to get you started in this journey

We made many mistakes when we began working on SEO. They were very avoidable, but it's tough to find all those lessons in one place.

To ensure you don't repeat them, I've listed them in a single thread:

Building a startup is tough!

We struggled for 2.5 years & then grew from $700k to $2 million in 1.5 years.

Marketing, sales, product & even managing my own mindset - we had to do well in all.

Here are 7 lessons along with links to detailed threads on my personal experiences👇🏼
1/ Validating your idea

A 100% validation of your idea cannot be done without actually taking the leap.

Your goal needs to be to get a better sense of the market and to improve your odds of success.

2/ Product building

Use your product to drive your business & NOT the other way around.

Also, don't build in isolation - make the simplest version that can get you going.

We wasted $10k to build rubbish and then made the first $100k using GoogleSheets.

In my startup’s journey to a million dollars, I've made a million mistakes.

These are mistakes I wish someone had warned me about when I was starting as an entrepreneur.

So to all aspiring entrepreneurs & startup enthusiasts, here are my top 7 mistakes, so you can avoid them👇
1/ Business before tech

Everyone wants to make a million dollars before making 1 dollar. So, we start by building complex tech.

BIG mistake!

You started a company to make money. Tech is meant to help you with that - not the other way round.

So, business-first. Tech-later.

Here’s how we screwed up:

My startup, Flexiple, grew from $1mn to $2mn revenue in 4 months - the major driver was SEO.

I absolutely love it, yet, it intimidates so many!

So, in 9 tweets, I'll explain SEO using the analogy of a LIBRARY - guarantee you'll understand it like never before :)

Thread🧵
1/ The characters involved

👩‍🦰 Librarian = Google
📚 Books = All websites
🧔Person searching for a book = Your potential customer

I'll connect it all in the end!
2/ Potential customer searches Google

This is equivalent to the person🧔 coming to the librarian👩‍🦰 and asking her to suggest the most relevant book📘 on say "Photosynthesis"

('cause I'm a nerd :P).

As the Indian startup ecosystem celebrates @zomato's IPO, here are the 5 lessons an early-stage founder can learn from it about entrepreneurial mindset, product & marketing.

Thread 🧵
1/ Don't obsess over unimportant things

Early on, founders treat every decision as being equally important.

- “What should be the color of this button?” becomes a team discussion.

- The font/ font size of the pitch deck is a serious team meeting
1/ (contd.): Zomato’s story

Even naming the startup becomes a bottleneck!

Zomato started as:
- Foodlet.in
- Then changed to Foodiebay.com in 2008
- Finally changed to Zomato only in mid-2010

Focus on important things!
