A woman went for IUD (Intrauterine device) after having her second child, she didn’t talk with her husband about it. 7years past, she even forgot about the IUD. It was when she started suffering from serious abdominal pain and fever, weight loss, difficulty in walking and-

-her husband was carrying her from one place to another, from one church to another, and finally they landed in a good hospital that the doctor there spotted what was wrong with her.

In the emergency room, during a physical exam, a lump was found in the lower left quadrant of her abdomen that was soft to the touch, so the doctor ordered a CT scan.

The findings showed a collection of localized pus surrounded by inflamed tissue around the device (IUD), which was still in the uterus.

Blood test results showed a massive infection as the body was trying to fight the infection, which was rapidly increasing, and had spread beyond the pelvis and into the left hip.

The active infection was majorly caused by Actinomycetes israelii bacteria. These bacteria are usually found in the vagina of healthy women but in certain conditions can result in “Actinomycosis”.

This condition can be treated with massive antibiotic treatment as it can be dangerous and chronic as well. The IUD was removed from her body.

The tests showed it was all as a result of the bacteria infection so the woman received extensive intravenous antibiotic treatment and she recovered with no lasting complications.

Her IUD was meant to expire after 3yrs, meaning it stayed in for 4yrs longer than it should and that was what resulted in the problems she faced.

But there was another problem, her husband wasn’t pleased at all. He felt betrayed and cheated on by his wife. He had no idea of the IUD.

That how can she go and take such a step without talking to him about it, how could she do that to him, that she should have at least talked to him. That family planning involves them both and she knew, she clearly knew he really wanted another child,he wanted a son so badly and-

-have been frustrated ever since. It happened that they only have two daughters and the man wanted a son too but the wife was ok with herself and took her decision on her own. After many yrs of trying and his wife couldn’t get pregnant again he was pained but took it as Godswill-

-not knowing it was her doing all along and she kept mute. It didn’t take long after that, he divorced her. He divorced her because of that.

Let me explain some terms:

IUD stands for intrauterine device. It is a birth control device and it is very effective. There are of different types and makes, some expire after 3yrs while others can last up to 10yrs before they expire.

IUDs are placed by healthcare professionals.
Don’t try to place it yourself and also, don’t try to remove it by yourself.

IUDs are not supposed to be allowed to stay in longer than they should. Once it is close to expiring it should be removed and replaced by another if you want to continue with the birth control.

If IUDs stay in longer than specified that can lead to infection and cause serious problems which can be life threatening. Just like what happened to this particular woman.

It is important you discuss the number of children you are to have with your husband and it depends on a lot of factor. Family planning should involve both the wife and the husband. It is very important. As in this case the husband felt betrayed and cheated on.
