Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update. Twice before in this past year, we have faced a new variant, so we have seen what can happen with a new and more infectious version of the virus. Each time this meant we needed to change our assumptions & approach. (1/12)

Currently, we know Omicron is more transmissible & causes more breakthrough infections in those who have previously been infected & those who have 2 doses of vaccine. (2/12)

There is a question about whether it is milder than previous infections, but the early indications from South Africa are that w/a larger number of people being infected more quickly, the overall impact on ICUs is rising. (3/12)

Here is a summary of the latest #COVID19AB numbers: There are now 366 people in hospital due to COVID-19. Of the 296 non-ICU, 62.9% are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. Of the 70 in ICU, 75.8% are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. (1/5)

Sadly 8 new COVID-related deaths were reported to AB Health in the last 24hrs. I extend my sincere condolences to all who are grieving the loss of a loved one. (3/5)

Here is a summary of the latest #COVID19AB numbers: There are now 365 people in hospital due to COVID-19. Of the 297 non-ICU, 63.3% are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. Of the 68 in ICU, 75% are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. (1/9)

Over the past 24 hours, we ID’d 202 new cases & completed about 4.2K tests. On Dec 11, we ID’d 288 new cases from about 6.5K tests. On Dec 10, 373 new cases were ID’d from about 8.6K tests. Complete, up-to-date data can be found here. alberta.ca/covid-19-alber… (2/9)

I would like to provide a #COVID19AB update on Omicron variant. Since Dec. 3 we have confirmed 8 new cases of the variant, bringing our total to 12. 11 cases in AB have been identified in returning travelers & 1 is a household contact.(1/9)

These individuals are isolating, and all appropriate public health follow-up is underway. To date, only mild symptoms have been reported & these individuals are recovering at home. As w/the other cases, these individuals have done nothing wrong & should not be stigmatized.(2/9)

Some household members of these cases have tested positive for COVID but have not yet been confirmed as Omicron. 1 household contact recently attended an elementary school in North Zone & 1 attended a high school. Out of an abundance of caution, we have notified the schools.(3/9)

Here is a summary of the latest #COVID19AB numbers: There are now 395 people in hospital due to COVID-19. Of the 317 non-ICU, 66.9% are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. Of the 78 in ICU, 82% are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. (1/4)

In the last 24 hours, we ID’d 349 new cases of COVID-19 from about 9.7K tests. Complete, up-to-date data can be found at alberta.ca/covid-19-alber… (2/4)

Sadly, 1 new death related to COVID-19 was reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours. I send my condolences to the loved ones of this individual, and to anyone who is grieving a loss from any cause. (3/4)

Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: The Alberta Advisory Committee on Immunization has recommended adults wait at least 8 weeks between 1st and 2nd doses of mRNA COVID vaccines. Evidence shows longer intervals can result in higher vaccine effectiveness. (1/10)

Based on data from Alberta & other jurisdictions, the risk of myocarditis following Moderna vaccine is higher than following Pfizer vaccine, especially in those aged 12 to 29. We advise that anyone aged 12 to 29 receive the Pfizer vaccine rather than Moderna. (2/10)

Over the past 24 hours, we ID’d 253 new cases of COVID-19 & completed about 5.3K tests. Our positivity rate is about 5.2 per cent. (3/10)
