When Gandhiji turned a reincarnation researcher - a thread: On Dec 11th, 1926, a girl was born in Delhi. She was named Shanti. Her life proceeded normally till she was about 4 years old. Then came a dramatic turn (1/12)
She started claiming that the home she lived in wasn't her own. She claimed she belonged to Mathura, was married & had a new born son. She also said her husband owned a cloth shop in Mathura (2/12)
Startled by her claims, her parents tried to dissuade her. When she was about 6, Shanti made a failed attempt to run away from home & travel to Mathura. The strange tale spread & in school, some teachers spoke with her at length (3/12)
Shanti surprised them by speaking in Mathura dialect, revealed that she had died 10 days after giving birth to a son & that her husband's name was Kedar Nath. The school headmaster made enquiries in Mathura (4/12)
His enquiries revealed a cloth trader in Mathura of the same name. Kedar revealed that 9 years earlier, his wife Lugdi Devi had died 10 days after giving birth to a son. The headmaster arranged for Kedar Nath to travel to Delhi (5/12)
At Shanti's home, Kedar Nath was introduced as his own elder brother. However, Shanti correctly identified him as Kedar as soon as she saw him. Kedar was allowed to talk to Shanti in private (6/12)
He was left startled as the little girl divulged facts that according to Kedar, only his deceased wife Lugdi Devi could have known. The case soon became quite famous & came to the attention of Gandhiji himself (7/12)
In 1935, Gandhiji formed a commission comprising of prominent people that included parliamentarians, media personnel & political leaders. The commission traveled to Mathura in 1936, carrying out investigation (8/12)
Shanti accompanied the commission during this visit and met her "family" there. The commission's report concluded that there was sufficient evidence to suggest that Shanti indeed was the reincarnation of Lugdi Devi (9/12)
Not everyone was willing to accept the verdict though. Bal Chand Nahata published a Hindi booklet basis his own investigation & arrived at the opposite conclusion (10/12)
Indra Sen, a disciple of Rishi Aurobindo, published an article challenging Nahata and supporting the original commission's findings. As late as 1986, Dr. Ian Stevenson, a renowned reincarnation expert, interviewed Shanti Devi (11/12)
He had written in his report, "...My research indicates that she made at least 24 statements of her memories that matched the verified facts." Shanti Devi never married & passed away in 1987 (12/12)
