Nearly four years ago, Future was 10 of us in a basement and hardly any members.

“One Day We’ll Help Millions.”

First week be damned, I told that to anyone who’d listen.

Today, we’ve built the best coaching team in the world.

Yeah, I said it!

Now, let me tell you how… Image
With a lifetime in elite sport, culture—I’d always been told—is everything.

Still, finishing both 1st and last, I learned firsthand; people are your culture.

Undeterred by the fact nobody even knew we existed,

I began writing the values that would define how we win. Image
Why values?

Because, culture—while it may sound nice—is subject to change at any moment.

Winning heals all wounds, but what if you’re not yet winning?

People—and, the values they live by—are the very crusaders who fight to grow a ‘culture’ befitting of champions.
Powerful mantras are carelessly thrown around when we discuss teams and culture.

It all *feels* good.

Yet, without personal meaning attached, these words ultimately fall short..

And, ring hollow.

Values, on the other hand, drive the decisions you make when adversity hits.
Easy enough.

Surely there’s a one-size-fits-all set of values that determine success across any endeavor.

Then again, if @RobertIger and @elonmusk have taught us anything; it depends upon the quest.

So, what then, would be the values to achieve our mission.

And, every hire? ImageImage
Others First: It’s not about me

Quite simply, we’re trying to help the 80% of our population who are not active enough, or at all.

Nothing else has worked.

For us to win, we can’t have egos and individual agendas.

Help others; that’s it.
Be Relentless: Work until...

Work to the point of obsession and they call you crazy.

But, as some guy once said, “it’s the ones crazy enough to believe they can change the world who actually do.”

Anything less and you’ll be mediocre; at best!

To win, we do whatever it takes. Image
Positive Vibes: Don’t kill my vibe

Not being fake, simply maintaining an awareness over what you say and how you say it.

Every one of us will have our days—or weeks even—where we’re frustrated and upset.

Still, our collective majority must ALWAYS remain positive.
Be a Giver: No keeping score

There are 3 types of people: givers, takers, & matchers.

Givers do whatever they can, whenever they can, because they can, to help others.

It’s that simple.

Instead of credit, we must win together - positive sum mentality.

h/t @AdamMGrant
Yes, And: Never “no, but”

Stealing from improv;

To arrive at the best ideas, we must be open to the awful and crazy ones.

Doing so creates an environment where everyone’s voice is heard.

In turn, we protect against the loudest voice, or the HiPPO winning the day.
Simple, yet powerful, these five values define our team.

Not because we talk about them, because we are about them.

We screen for them meticulously.

When we find coaches who embody them, we recruit passionately.

And for those reasons, we will win...
So that’s how we built the best coaching team in the world.

Of course champions in sport & business—though uncommon—are formed in many ways.

For me, ‘Legacy’ by James Kerr has been a tremendous resource to find a winning formula.

2021 has been transformational for me in many ways.

Here are 20 of my biggest reflections and affirmations:
Showing up is a skill

Some will show up most days, very few show up every day.

The resolve to keep showing up will set you apart.

Remember, success happens slowly and then all at once.

You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.

THREAD: 11 lessons to be uncommon amongst uncommon people.

From coaching a gold medalist, an NBA MVP, and now working with top founders & VC’s…

here’s what I’ve learned about what it takes to stand out:
Be selfish

Your growth requires it.

Routinely take inventory on your ‘circle of five’ - if they’re not pushing you, keep it movin’.

Pour into yourself and eventually the right people will catch up.
Run towards fear

Lean in, build up your threshold incrementally, and find drive in your own fear and insecurities.

Leverage fear as an accelerant to learning.

The stress arousal can trigger a heightened flow state, and unlock superpowers you didn’t know existed.

THREAD: 7 keys to giving next level feedback

In sports—as in business and life—psychology and language can make all the difference in unlocking the potential of others

Great coaches recognize this and carefully craft their approach, demeanor, and the composition of their words
🔑 Keep the positive personal, make the negative technical

Triumph their wins - draw clear associations b/t their efforts and the successful outcome.

Don’t attach blame to failure - key in on the technical/tactical solution.

Model “extreme ownership” & they will follow.
🔑 Window of opportunity

Timing is everything. What you say is only as effective as *when* you say it.

If emotion is high, they will not be open to internalize critical feedback and this could lead to long-term performance anxiety, or resent.

Resent fractures trust.

Go to bed at the same time. Turn off your electronics hours before bed. Shower. Meditate. Read. Relax...

Having a bedtime ritual is great in theory. In practice, life happens.

Here are 8 practical strategies I’ve used to help Olympians, Pro’s, and even Average Joe’s 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽
1/ 6-7.5-9-10.5

8 hours is outdated. Think in terms of your body’s natural 90min sleep cycles. Wake up in the wrong part and you’ll be groggy much of the day.

Just miss the 9hr window?

You’re better off staying up for one more @netflix episode and settling for 7.5hrs instead.
2/ Beware of your body “re-norming”

It’s easy to rationalize that you can get by on 6hrs - and isolated, that’s true.

Do so for 2 weeks straight?

Your body compares against yesterday. So, while you may feel “normal”, you’ll function on par as you would after 2 days w/o sleep.

Placebo Effect 101

A snake oil salesman is a trader in lies and false cures. Deceitful, sure. But, is there any harm if it works?

And besides, lost over the years is the inconvenient fact that snake oil did, in fact, work.

Here’s Placebo Effect 101...

👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽 Image
1/ Placebo Effect refers to the phenomenon that occurs when a positive benefit is produced from a ‘placebo’ drug or treatment.

Essentially, because you *believe* the placebo works, your mind activates your body chemistry and the psychological now becomes physiological.
2/ The earliest reported example of the placebo effect occurred in 1799.

Elisha Perkins, a Connecticut surgeon had invented two metal rods which, when rubbed over a painful area were touted to draw disease from the body.

Even George Washington bought a set of Perkins tractors. Image
