At the risk of sounding like a broken record here, the govt order was a secondary issue; the primary one was FDA non-approval of the dozens of rapid tests made here & elsewhere that have been awaiting clearance for a year or so.

Since rapid tests are back in the news (again), here's a reminder - by me, in early September - that this problem has been well-known for a long, long while now: "U.S. Regulators Are Failing the (Rapid) Test"… Image
Probably the most frustrating part of the US rapid test debacle is that this product isn't complicated or novel like an mRNA vaccine. It's simple, and there are dozens of manufacturers around the world. The main bottleneck wasn't production; it was FDA approval.
