87/ MEXICO: very poor ventilation in movie theater @Cinemex (Pabellón Cuauhtémoc)

2300 ppm CO2 = ~5% of air that people breathe is "second-hand air", that has been in someone else's lungs before

Without distance, eating/drinking (so no masks) etc.

88/ CANADA (BC @PHSAofBC): Top Public Health Official B. Henry in incredible collection of errors and denial of science during 2021

- denying obvious airborne
- denying that masks protect against aerosols
- denying school transmission
- so many more...

89/ MEXICO: (Guadalajara, @FILGuadalajara) cabins for spraying disinfectants on people before entering the Book Fair

For an airborne virus (who.int/news-room/ques…) that goes poorly, if at all, thru surfaces (cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…)

HT @miricaiba Image
90/ NETHERLANDS (Vaccination facility @MinVWS): unmasked staff (!!) for the airborne virus that spreads the fastest in history. Public in poorly sealing surgical and cloth masks.

HT @equibotanica Image
91/ SPAIN: National Public TV (@rtve, @OCRTVE; @PatrimNacional) shows Christmas Concert w/ useless transparent masks that do nothing to stop this AIRBORNE (who.int/news-room/ques…) virus!

Way to give the worst example to the population as omicron surges!

92/ CHINA: as part of the lockdown in Xi'an, massive disinfection of outdoors. Completely useless and polluting:

- COVID goes poorly if at all, thru surfaces (cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…)
- Transmission outdoors minimal, outdoor surfaces disinfected by sun

93/ NETHERLANDS (@Rinjstate hospital): forces visitors to replace highly protective FFP2 mask w/ FAR worse surgical mask

Justifies it w/ completely outdated & WRONG theory of droplet transmission. COVID is airborne, even @WHO has accepted: who.int/news-room/ques…

HT @_j3lena_ Image
94/ USA (Florida, @RSWAirport)

Still clinging to totally outdated guidelines. Ad only mentions hand washing & disinfection, for virus that goes barely, if at all, through surfaces

No mention of N95 masks/ventilation, for airborne virus who.int/news-room/ques….

HT @CarlGranjero Image
95/ COLOMBIA (restaurant in Cartagena; @MinSaludCol; @AlcaldiaCTG):

Scientist colleague sends this picture of useless weird face shield (taken w/ consent of waitress). Apparently this is quite common there.

Colombia still in denial of #COVIDisAirborne, despite @WHO admits it Image
96/ USA (Colorado): meat packing industry does not supply N95 masks for a fast-spreading airborne virus (who.int/news-room/ques…) w/ known airborne outbreaks in meat packing (dx.doi.org/10.15252/emmm.…)

Reflects abject failures of @CDCgov & @OSHA_DOL

nytimes.com/2021/12/29/bus…
97/ POLAND (Warsaw, @FIDE_chess
World Rapid and Blitz Championships):

indoors, many without masks, or below nose, or poorly fitting surgical / cloth. NO MATCH for a fast-spreading airborne virus (who.int/news-room/ques…)

98/ IRELAND (Chief Medical Officer, @CMOIreland @roinnslainte)

First PH measure is handwashing when surface transmission is minor at best: cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…

No mention of masks, ventilation for AIRBORNE virus!! who.int/news-room/ques…

99/ US (Florida, Governor @GovRonDeSantis): speaking at a concert. His wife is battling breast cancer (as he mentions in his speech)

Cancer patients are generally immunosuppressed & prone to more serious COVID & death. She is NOT WEARING ANY MASK for an airborne virus!
100/ AUSTRALIA (Dr John Gerrard, @qldhealth Chief Health Officer) MISinforming

"If you are sitting in your desk in an office, you can take your mask off"

"If you are in meeting & you can distance > 1.5 m, you can take your mask off"

facebook.com/watch/live/?re…

HT @DamianTheAussie
100/ AUSTRALIA (Continued): The misinformation provided by Queensland Health @qldhealth is especially precious as Queensland is home to Professor Lidia Morawska, whose research and leadership (academic.oup.com/cid/article/71…) convinced @WHO that #COVIDisAirborne:

who.int/news-room/ques… Image
101/ POLAND (University of Poznań @UAM_Poznan): instructions for the library insist on hand hygiene, for a virus that goes barely, IF AT ALL, through surfaces (cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…)

But people can remove their masks when seated, for an airborne virus!

lib.amu.edu.pl/using-universi… Image
102/ NETHERLANDS (Dept. of Motor Vehicles
@CBRnl)

Promotion of driving license exams with Dutch celebrities, wearing ridiculously unprotective face shields for an AIRBORNE virus (who.int/news-room/ques…):

[Netherlands competing for TOP in Hall of Shame]
103/ US @CDCgov has yet to find ANY excuse for NOT recommending #N95ForAll that it doesn't like

- Only HCWs need them
- There are shortages (untrue)
- People too dumb to fit them
- Too uncomfortable

6abc.com/n95-mask-cdc-r…

For the fastest transmitting AIRBORNE virus ever! Image
104/ GERMANY (many states): Bus & Taxi drivers not required to wear masks at work, exposing themselves & passengers

For fastest transmitting AIRBORNE virus (who.int/news-room/ques…) known to humankind!

Despite @c_drosten explaining airborne for 2 yrs

bussgeldkatalog.org/ausnahmen-mask… Image
105/ CANADA (@CDCofBC): Health Care Workers want to volunteer to provide boosters. But they are afraid of getting infected, they want to wear N95

Manufacturer offers to donate N95s, @CDCofBC REFUSES TO ALLOW IT, slowing booster campaign! This is LUNACY

bc.ctvnews.ca/burnaby-based-… Image
@CDCofBC 106/ NETHERLANDS (Health Minister @hugodejonge @MinVWS): keeps tweeting videos & pics promoting vax

Many on the pics:

- No mask
- Mask below nose
- Leaky surgical masks
- Few FFP2, none from personnel

107/ SPAIN (Ministry of Health @sanidadgob):

For AIRBORNE virus, ZERO demonstrated cases of surface transmission. @CDCgov 1.5 yrs: transmits, BARELY, IF AT ALL, THROUGH SURFACES...

AGAIN push MISINFORMATION that washing hands important for this virus!

108/ SWEDEN 🇸🇪 (@Folkhalsomynd): posters everywhere Jan. 2022: "The most common spread of infection occurs via our hands"

For AIRBORNE virus: who.int/news-room/ques…

ZERO proven cases of hand transmission; we know VERY unlikely: cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…

109/ USA (North Carolina @ncdhhs): misinforming public about N95 masks

- Not recommending N95 for fastest transmitting AIRBORNE virus know to humankind

- Suggests N95 shortage, when @AMMAunited has millions of N95 it can't sell(ammaunited.org/post/one-year-…)

covid19.ncdhhs.gov/information/in… Image

111/ SWEDEN 🇸🇪: Minister of Social Insurance (@socialdep) at retirement home, w/ visor, no mask

For AIRBORNE virus (who.int/news-room/ques…) transmitted by aerosols. Face shields protect 2% against aerosols! (tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…)

#COVIDHallofShame

Image
112/ SPAIN 🇪🇸 (city of Alicante):

The City will disinfect the streets before the Wise Kings Parade!

For a virus that goes barely, if at all, through surfaces (cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…), and transmits mostly indoors (at least 20 times more than outdoors

113/ USA 🇺🇸: @CDCgov reaching total absurdity:

- recommends respirators (e.g. N95) to protect against inhalation of smoke aerosols

- Does NOT recommend respirators to protect against main transmission of COVID-19, inhalation of respiratory aerosols!!

114/ USA 🇺🇸(RI): e.g. persistence of misinformation about #COVIDisAirborne, bc VERY poor job @CDCgov @WHO have done to explain it clearly

Elderly neighbor, gets COVID, asks neighbors to visit elder relatives & disinfect surfaces (risking infecting them!)

115/ @WHO: Even @WHO has quietly admitted #COVIDisAirborne and no longer says droplets are dominant, their behavior at in-person press conferences, where none of the participants wear masks, belies their acknowledgement that it's airborne

Set an example!

Image
116/ PHILIPPINES🇵🇭: extensive use of lateral plexiglas (perspex) barriers in schools. They INCREASE transmission (@ScienceMagazine, science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…). Trap virus-laden air & make ventilation more difficult.

@DOHgovph stuck on droplets, doesn't understand #COVIDisAirborne ImageImageImageImage
117S/MÉXICO🇲🇽: stronger denial of dominant AIRBORNE transmission, still emphasizing surfaces by @lopezobrador_ & @HLGatell

Spraying ppl w/ disinfectants, disinfect under shoes... despite 0 proven cases of surface transmission (cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…)

ImageImage
118S/MÉXICO🇲🇽:(Sinaloa @sinaloagobmx): spraying disinfectants into the air in empty conference rooms.

Absurd waste of resources and disinfection theater, disinfectants can be toxic to people entering rooms later. Unclear what goal is?

#COVIDHallofShame

119S/ PHILIPPINES🇵🇭: strange barriers in motorcycles to avoid transmission among riders. But limited trans. outdoors (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33249484/), mostly talking face-toface, nearly impossible when moving, esp. mask & helmet

[I am told this is still in use]

newsinfo.inquirer.net/1318095/ano-st… Image
120S/CANADA🇨🇦(BC School Board Trustee)

Spreading misinformation about usefulness of filtering in classrooms. Mechanical Vent + MERV13 is useful, but almost always not enough. HEPA or #corsirosenthalbox would help A LOT, esp. w/ omicron

#COVIDHallofShame

121S/ NETHERLANDS🇳🇱 (Government @Rijksoverheid):

Absurd advice on schools:
- importance of ventilation unclear (AIRBORNE virus who.int/news-room/ques…)
- Handwashing & disinfection MORE important (0 proven cases surface trans. cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…)

rijksoverheid.nl/onderwerpen/co… Image
122/CANADA🇨🇦: (Dr. Deena Hinshaw @CMOH_Alberta):

States that there is "no conclusive evidence" that N95 masks are better than surgical masks. For the fastest transmitting AIRBORNE virus (who.int/news-room/ques…) ever! Ignores science.

#COVIDHallofShame

Image
123/ MEXICO🇲🇽(@GobiernoMX): ABSURD ad about COVID transmission:

- virus infects people outdoors, far away from others
- Only recommendation is to eat healthy foods
- from govt. that continues to DENY airborne transmission

1/ Survey of CO2 indoors during trip

CO2 (above ~400 ppm outdoors) indicates the amount of exhaled air (& virus) trapped in a space

Also per recent scientific results by @ukhadds, CO2 helps SARS-CoV stay infectious in air much longer

@united flight boarding, pretty terrible! Image
2/ This is the trip so far:

-Low outdoors
-Pretty high ~2000 in @RideRTD bus to airport
- ok ~800 at @DENAirport, except restroom ~1500. Not sure why restrooms at this airport are so often poorly ventilated
- Then boarding on @united, ventilation OFF, so huge increase till ON Image
3/ For details of the recent results on how and why CO2 makes SARS-CoV-2 stay infectious much longer in the air, see this recent thread by @ukhadds

1/ "After four years of fighting about it, @WHO has finally proclaimed that viruses, including the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID, can be spread through the air"

By @maggiemfoxscientificamerican.com/article/a-figh…
2/ "It took four years to get here because some leaders in public health, medicine and science clung too tightly to precision and semantics"

"One particular moment of shame came on March 28, 2020, when WHO tweeted: “FACT: #COVID19 is NOT airborne.”

3/ "Words matter. When people heard that COVID might spread on surfaces, they wasted time wiping down groceries. People who misunderstood airborne spread needlessly wore masks on outdoor walks and veered off sidewalks to avoid their neighbors."

1/ @WHO has published a report on updated terminology for disease transmission

I've seen some debate about it. My take:

- Terminology itself is ok. Big progress
- But no recommendations of how to protect!

Report:

Press release: who.int/publications/m…
who.int/news/item/18-0…
2/ The report was likely the result of intense pressure on @WHO during the pandemic:

- They denied that #COVIDIsAirborne on March 2020
- They finally accepted it 2 years later

nature.com/articles/d4158…
@WHO 3/ To their credit, @WHO did invite some of their critics to be part of the committee.

What was the terminology before. In medical circles:

- droplet transmission: if it happened in close proximity, or if particles were > 5 microns

- airborne transmission: if it happened far

1/ Checking the ventilation by measuring CO2 as I travel to the #AAAR2023 conference

@RideRTD bus to Denver airport. Bus route had started 3 min before I got in, already 1500 ppm

Typical of these @RideRTD buses, poor ventilation Image
2/ Not getting any better as time passes in the @rideRTD bus to the airport...

7% of the air is being re-breathed, it has already been in someone else lungs when each of us breathe it. Image
@RideRTD 3/ Given the often poor-to-mediocre ventilation in US transportation systems, I wear N95 masks (not KN95, less good)

In this case @3M VFlex, which I tested at 99.99% filtration for myself

It also stays sealed when I talk, doesn't distort my speech (& add to my Spanish accent) Image
