Christmas day I developed agonising pain in my side. It was intermittant I suspected a kidney stone. I was sent to out of hours doctor on call service he referred me to the local acute hospital and I was told I had a bed
When I arrived I was told they didnt realise I also had Covid. I was informed since I had Covid they no longer had a bed for me, (no spaces in the red pathway) I was given medication & a single dose of pain relief and sent home with the promise of a CT the next day
The medication wore off by 8am I was curled up in a ball crying the pain was so bad my husband called an ambulance but was told I didnt "qualify" for one and was referred to NHS 24- 10 minutes on hold, 10 minutes of irrelevant questions to be told he should take me back to A&E
Once I arrived I was given a CT within 8 hours
It revealed a large cyst on my ovary, & liver lesions. The pain is possibly because the growth is tortioning
Its large enough that it needs surgically removed but I have been sent home & told to come back if the pain recurs
So why am I sharing this intensely personal experience?
Because this is what people are up against when they are trying to access much needed care.
