When violence against AsianAmericans spiked earlier this year, I started to collect good news stories about the AAPI community. Initially this was just for me to help cheer up through tough times, but I was blown away by what I found. I’d like to share the list with you.THREAD
Early this year, we swore in the first Asian American Vice President. A few days before, I got to stand alongside @StricklandforWA and others in Congress to be sworn in as the largest number of AAPI members in history. 2/14 axios.com/asian-american…
AAPIs were elected to lead major American cities. Michelle Wu was elected Mayor of Boston, Aftab Pureval in Cincinnati, and Bruce Harrell in Seattle. Many more elected across state and local offices signifying a new generation stepping up. 3/14
My kids and I jumped for joy watching Suni Lee win the Gold medal! Jay Litherland and Erica Sullivan both swam to their first medals. Justine Wong-Orantes helped Team USA win first ever gold in women’s volleyball. Lee Kiefer won gold in fencing. 4/14

Olivia Rodrigo got 7 Grammy nominations and was named Entertainer of the Year. From Drivers License/TikTok to the White House, she became an icon that AAPI kids and aspiring artists can look up to when searching for inspiration on their own journeys. 5/14 time.com/entertainer-of…
Chloe Zhao won two Oscars for best picture and best director for Nomadland. She is the first woman of color and second woman ever to win best director. 6/14

Early this year, Simu Li became the first AAPI to hold a lead role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe starring as Shang Chi in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The movie quickly became a box office sensation with a sequel in development. 7/14

A beautiful movie Minari told a tender story of a Korean American family seeking to find belonging. It resonated strongly with me and many others as it won awards including Oscar for best supporting actress. Here is an article I wrote about the film. 8/14 foreignpolicy.com/2021/04/14/asi…
Ji-Young, a new AAPI character on Sesame Street, was another positive addition this year. With a lot of hatred and vitriol being focused on AAPIs, I’m glad to see Sesame Street standing up and teaching the next generation compassion and tteokbokki. 9/14 apnews.com/article/sesame…
Communities all over the country came together to support Asian American businesses during the pandemic. Chinatown NYC was devastated at the beginning of the lockdown in 2020, but through the generosity of many, those businesses are coming back. 10/14
cnbc.com/amp/2021/05/28…
Lucy Koh was confirmed to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. She is the first Korean American woman to become a federal appellate judge. There remain very few AAPI judges across the court system, but this is a promising step towards more equality. 11/14 thehill.com/homenews/58566…
In Illinois and soon NJ, AAPI history will be taught in schools. It shows our story matters and it is an integral part of American history. “Hate comes from a place of ignorance … we will not only be teaching them, but we will be building empathy.” 12/14
nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna9…
In Congress, we had a hearing to start effort to create a national museum for AAPI that could be part of Smithsonian. There are so many AAPI making history, it’s important we create a place that looks at ALL of AAPI history, past and present. 13/14
thehill.com/homenews/house…
There is no denying 2021 was a tough year, but I hope this list reminds you of how we move this country forward. Millions of AAPIs stood up this year to be heard and seen. Millions of other Americans stood by our side. Let’s keep this momentum going into 2022 and beyond. END

Two swastikas were just found drawn in boys’ bathroom at Marlton Middle School. “Hitler was right” written by a stick figure with X’ed out eyes and the word “Jew.” This is disgusting. We must condemn these incidents, but we must do more.THREAD philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2021/12/17/swa…
Parents everywhere pray the walls of our schools can keep out the hate, but incidents like this give us worry because they remind us that we cannot perfectly shield our kids from the hurt out in the world. It particularly hurts to see this hate in the town where I grew up.2/10
Just a few weeks ago a swastika was found in the parking lot of a synagogue nearby. A sixth grader was the one who discovered it. That breaks my hearts to know that a child came across that threat. 3/10

“Hold The Line” said @mariaressa upon receiving the Nobel Peace Prize yesterday. Those words were the first and last sentences of her remarks to the world. They have stuck in my mind ever since. It is an urgent call to action, but for what? Here’s what i discovered…(THREAD)
HOLD THE LINE FOR TRUTH: Ressa describes a world plagued by a virus of lies that pits “us against each other, brings out our fears, anger and hate.” But what I found so fascinating is that she then goes into greater detail on what exactly breaks down and why it is dangerous.2/12
Ressa says “Without facts, you can’t have truth. Without truth, you can’t have trust. Without trust, we have no shared reality, no democracy, and it becomes impossible to deal with our world’s existential problems: climate, coronavirus, the battle for truth.”3/12

As I walked through the rotunda to honor Senator Dole, I thought about the story of Dole standing and saluting Senator Inouye at his Lying in State. It’s a story better than Hollywood that speaks to the best of Congress – and feels so different from where we are today. THREAD
Senators Dole and Inouye met each other as they recovered from their wounds in WW2 in a Michigan army hospital, a building that is now named after them. Both were seriously injured during combat in Italy. aarp.org/home-family/vo… 2/8
Dole and Inouye kept each other company in the hospital. Inouye taught Dole how to play Bridge.  Dole shared with Inouye his aspirations for political office including Congress and both ended up serving together in the Senate for nearly 30 yrs. 3/8

There is a lot we don’t know yet about Omicron, but below is everything I’ve been able to pull together in one place. What we see is concerning but no definitive answer yet about potential to become more transmissible or reduce vaccine effectiveness. Here is what we know…THREAD
Where did Omicron come from? WHO was just notified about the variant 4 days ago (Nov 24). The first known confirmed infection was from a specimen collected on Nov 9 in South Africa. Linked is the official WHO announcement of the variant with details.2/14

What are major concerns? This article frames 3 things we still need to know.
1)how quickly it spreads
2)if it’s capable of causing more serious disease
3)whether it might circumvent immune protection from previous infections or from vaccine/treatment.3/14

When I see the vitriol/hate that members of congress spew at each other online, I sometimes need to remind myself that these are actually my coworkers. It’s surreal that people whose job description is in the constitution would promote anger/violence. Why does this happen? THREAD
RISE OF PERFORMATIVE GOVERNANCE: “If you aren’t making news, you aren’t governing.” This quote from a colleague sums up much of what I see wrong at the Capitol. Attention itself is not the commodity of governance. Our job is supposed to be about bettering lives. 2/10
Beyond the conflation of attention with meaningful contribution, we also see the consequences of the deep political stagnation over years. As the dysfunction that prevents the kind of real lawmaking grows, the role of social influencer becomes more enticing. 3/10

8 months ago today I watched with horror the Atlanta shooting targeting AAPI victims. Today, I’m watching @WuTrain sworn in as Boston mayor, watching @AftabPureval about to become Cincinnati mayor, @BruceforSeattle winning Seattle mayor. So Proud. THREAD. wgbh.org/news/local-new…
I love that these amazing wins are getting so much attention, but I also look forward to when it is totally normal for AAPIs to win. We aren’t just a new generation of AAPI leaders, we are American leaders. Our stories are not just AAPI stories, they're American stories.2/6
What these wins show is that AAPIs can win not just in areas with large AAPI pops. We can win anywhere in America. And we have as much right as anyone else to represent anywhere. AAPI pop in Cincinnati is only 2.2%. Boston is 10%. Seattle about 15%.
