I woke up today with an (atypical) desire to make New Year's resolutions. I don't believe in them, usually--if you're going to resolve to do something, I usually think, just get on with things and do it--but for some reason, I woke up in a reforming zeal. Thus my 2022 vows:
1. This apartment is a constant, low-level pigsty. I resolve to keep it cleaner. Particularly, I resolve to take out the garbage promptly. I tend to avoid this because the garbage bins in my building are in my basement, and my apartment is a 5th-story walkup.
What's more, the lights in the basement are on a very short timer. If you get caught down there when they go off, you swiftly imagine you'll never find your way out and they won't find your body until the rats have gnawed every last bit of flesh off of you.
Also, the stairs to the basement are super-steep, and if you're carrying big and awkward bags of garbage, it's really easy to trip, which results in garbage everywhere and a race against the timer and the ravenous rats.
My enthusiasm for taking out the garbage is waning by the second as I consider this.

Maybe I can live with the bags of garbage by the door. They're sealed so they don't smell. Never mind on that resolution.
2. Really, I should get out more. I live in Paris. There's so much to see and to do. I should take advantage of it.

That said, it's awfully cozy in my apartment. And perhaps if I hang out in here a few more weeks, I can be the only person in the world who doesn't catch Omicron.
I've made it this far without getting Covid, wouldn't it be foolish to catch it now, when we're so close to the finish line? (I think it's quite plausible that we might be.)

Well, that resolution's a "maybe."
3. What about organizing all my papers? I've been meaning to do that for literally years. I've got a huge plastic tub of papers to file that's been sitting in my attic since 2015.
Perhaps that can be my 2022 vow.
Yes, I'll do that, for sure.

Tomorrow.

In October 2020, Cutler et al. estimated that when all was said and done, the pandemic would cost the US 16 trillion dollars. jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/…. This estimate, they said, was "optimistic." And indeed it was.
The death/morbidity toll now looks to be much higher than they expected. Using their methodology--which is rough, but reasonable--I think they'd have to revise the cost up considerably. So we're probably talking about $20, 21 trillion.
(When you get into numbers like this, an error of one or two trillion doesn't seem so huge. But remember, these are *trillions.* The rounding error here is the cost of the whole war in Afghanistan.)

Shadi, this makes zero sense. Liberals made masks, expertise, and science a "cultural identity marker" because it is stark raving insane in a pandemic to adopt any other culture. You seem to be assuming it's normal, somehow, that half our country has entered a mass psychosis--
such that the afflicted *reject lifesaving modern medicine* in preference for voodoo formulas made of ivermectin and Vitamin D. They're at the level of *shaking rattles* at the ill, whereas the rest of the country lives in the 21st century.
There's no "two sides" when it comes to the anti-vax crap. A significant section of the American public has *lost its fucking mind.* It's a mass psychosis. Delusional. This has nothing to do with *anything* liberals did.

If you missed it yesterday, we felt this essay about the First World War--my father wrote it--was the right way to begin explaining the significance of the Ukraine crisis, of which many seem to be saying, "Why does it matter?" claireberlinski.substack.com/p/the-great-war
That war gave birth to the modern world. We have never recovered from it. We *can't* recover it, because once you know such a thing is possible, you can never unlearn it.
Western civilization will never again be as buoyantly confident and optimistic. *Human* civilization will never be as confident or optimistic. We are all children of that war, whether we know its details or not.

Hi @MoneyGram, I'm case number 22249950. Just over a month ago, you revoked my account because you "identified it as being at high risk of fraud, scams, or other associated activity which may include a violation of MoneyGram’s Terms and Conditions."
I sent you an email asking why and what I could do to assure you that a) I'm the real Claire Berlinski; and b) I truly *do* want to send money to a family in Afghanistan--the beneficiaries of this fundraiser: gofundme.com/manage/please-…
This was your reply. I've heard nothing from you since.
This family needs the money I'm trying to send them. I'm sure you've heard that things are not going well in Afghanistan.
Generous donors contributed to that GoFundMe account.

So, last night I ordered a meal from @DeliverooHelp. It was never delivered. Not at all. No food. Nothing. Since then, I have tried politely to get @deliveroofrance's attention via email and DM. I've provided them with all the information about the order.
I've reminded them, politely.
They have not answered.
I spent more than 30 euros on a meal that wasn't delivered. That's a lot of money for a meal that wasn't delivered, isn't it?
I would expect not only a refund, but an apology.
Instead, I'm being ignored.
What's the word for taking someone's money but failing to provide the good promised in exchange?

Oh, yes, I know! "Theft."
