Doing #Veganuary this year? I’ve got some tips from my 25 yrs of veganism and as a public health dietitian:
-Don’t get caught up in the minutia! Traces of potential animal products are inconsequential to saving animals
-Packaged, frozen, and canned foods are very helpful! 1/
-Find the foods and meals that speak to your social/cultural life. Same with cookbooks.
-But also explore worldly foods that have FANTASTIC plant-based options!
-Make extra time for cooking/preparing. It’s a learning experience
-Know there will be failures and that’s ok!
2/
-Don’t get caught up in the overly restrictive Whole Foods Plant Based (WFPB) world.
-Involve others! Studies show that a support system is the most important component of behavior change
-Don’t waste time w naysayers. People love to hate on those who try to make a difference
3/
-Veganism shouldn’t be a restrictive thing you suffer through for the animals. It can be joyous and open your world of food!
-Find the people and orgs who ‘speak your language’ who you can turn to for support.
-Avoid the infighting. Twitter beefs aren’t vegan. 😉
4/
-Please learn the basics of nutrition. @veganoutreach is great
-Lastly, doing the best you can helps others by modeling the behavior. There’s no perfection, just all of us stumbling along in a cruel world. You got this. ✊🏼
Okay one more tweet. This post by @TheVeganRD on @vegan’s site is an excellent nutrition primer
