That’s not to say that the government has done a perfect job, but we have free vaccines and if everyone would do what the government has been pleading with them to do for 10 months and get vaccinated we’d all be in a much better position
I have no idea, frankly none, why anyone is choosing to undermine the government *as a whole* when what we need is people to more carefully listen to the government’s solution to the problem which is a *vaccine.*
I'm sorry, did I claim somewhere that free vaccines were "sufficient?" I don't believe I did. Rather, I believe I responded to a claim that the government had totally and completely abandoned the American people. And this claim is objectively false.
Here's what I told my older parents:
-You're boosted & therefore, per *evidence* very protected
-You also need to control the spread & as your daughter I have extra concern
-Hospitals are at capacity. You don't want even a mild fever
-Therefore, limit contact & always wear an N95
I also told my parents that there could very likely be a worker shortage soon that could affect the entire supply chain. I told them to please not over-buy, but to make sure they were comfortable for a week or two. I told my siblings the same & warned them of issues w/ daycare.
I have been specifically strict w/ my boosted but immunocompromised father, who has cancer. I have convinced him to not go to church & to do his best to convince my boosted mom to do the same. I've told them, "no matter what, if hospitals are full, just stay home."
I am taking Omicron seriously. I am asking my loved ones to take it seriously. I wish the gov't would do a better communications job + figure out how to get tests + N95s to everyone as fast as possible. But the gov't hasn't abandoned people & I don't know why you would claim that

If you want a President AOC one day, you should vote for Democrats in every election, even if you don't like them. If the conservatives continue to gain ground in the courts, none of the progressive legislative dreams you have will come to fruition for the next generation.
I know a lot of people don't want a President AOC, but that's not the point I'm making. I'm saying to the people who do: now is the time to lay the groundwork for your dreams by voting for the courts. If you refrain from this, you will achieve nothing, no matter who is POTUS.
Democrats can fight about their competing visions in the primaries to come, but, at the end of the day, no faction of the Dem party will be able to make those visions concrete if we have conservative courts. Let's build the skeleton--the courts--together, then fight from there
BBB is in flux & its outcome is unknown. So many of the provisions in it would be transformative just in and of themselves. One provision I really care about is subsidizing elderly/disabled peoples' homecare. When I tell people in rural PA about this, they light up w/ hope.
People literally act as if I've electrified them w/ just this *one* policy alone. It's a testament to how much they have to care for disabled &/or elderly relatives & how that has impacted their own economic opportunities. I also meet so many who are confined at home, themselves
Also, for folks on twitter: BBB recognizes GenX, Millennials, & Gen-Z will all be "sandwich" generations. Many of us are personally in debt. The cost of childcare is prohibitive, as is the cost of eldercare. We will all be tasked w/ the pull between children, work, & our parents
In 1985, hemophiliac HIV+ children were being kicked out of schools. Scientists asked President Reagan to plainly state HIV could not spread through "casual contact." Reagan instead said the science was still out. This approach was recommended by his legal advisor, John G Roberts
At that time, gay men in particular were suffering from AIDS in the US, as were other groups, such as those who used intravenous drugs. The hemophiliac population was struck almost all at once, thru the blood supply. Kids w/ hemophilia were expelled + had their houses burned down
Reagan would not listen to gay men or other vulnerable people who were dying en masse. There was a sense, however, that he would say something to protect children from stigma. Reagan, with the guidance of now Supreme Court Justice John Roberts, did the opposite.
Omicron wave: Hospitals will be just as, if not more strained, than before. Boosted, non-vulnerable people don't have to live in extreme fear re: their personal health, tho they should be cautious. Everyone will likely be affected by extreme disruptions in societal functioning.
The sheer number of *mild* breakthrough cases, in combo w/ more severe cases, will mean worker shortages unlike what we've seen before. This will impact individual businesses & the supply chain. Schools are going to be a hot mess.
Don't freak out about your own health if you're boosted. Yes, be cautious, but you have a lot of protection. Of course you also need to protect those around you. That said, *everyone* needs to prepare in a non-frantic way for the worker shortages.
Omicron:
Will likely be devastating to unvaxxd people
Will harm hospitals & medical workers
Will cause other worker shortages
Will put kids & immunocompromised people in danger
This is all awful
If you are a vaxx'd adult w/o immunocompromise, you're in a relatively safe position
Everyone should wear an N95, ensure they are boosted, etc. Your personal health is fairly well assured thru boosters. You still want to maintain maximum protection for yourself & for others thru masking. I would also try to avoid other things that could land you in the hospital
The boosters work. Protect yourself and others by masking & taking precautions & remember, our immune systems recognize this now. They are fighting Omicron. Your body has a power it didn't have in 2020. It has *some* immunity. Be very careful, but don't be terrified.
It's ironic that the creators of Don't Look Up are also caricatures in the crisis. Obama got the globe to sign a climate change agreement. Trump abandoned it. Don't look at that difference. Biden's pushing climate change legislation that the GOP opposes. Don't look at that either
The Paris Climate Accord is in no way perfect, but it was still a big deal. And Build Back Better would also make a big difference. Both are more meaningful than a star-studded film. Yet the climate warriors behind that film are actively discouraging advocating for such action.
"Don't Look Up" satirized politicians' response to climate change, as well as the press's. Maybe it would have been a more successful satire if it had included political hipsters. Those who believe posturing in favor of a good cause is more valiant than actually fighting for it.
