In 1985, hemophiliac HIV+ children were being kicked out of schools. Scientists asked President Reagan to plainly state HIV could not spread through "casual contact." Reagan instead said the science was still out. This approach was recommended by his legal advisor, John G Roberts
At that time, gay men in particular were suffering from AIDS in the US, as were other groups, such as those who used intravenous drugs. The hemophiliac population was struck almost all at once, thru the blood supply. Kids w/ hemophilia were expelled + had their houses burned down
Reagan would not listen to gay men or other vulnerable people who were dying en masse. There was a sense, however, that he would say something to protect children from stigma. Reagan, with the guidance of now Supreme Court Justice John Roberts, did the opposite.
Despite pleas from scientists, Reagan told the public that the science was out. That perhaps "casual contact" could spread the disease, implying that the expulsion of HIV+ children from schools was justified. Scientists tried to respond, but the damage was done. Reagan lied.
John Roberts, now SCOTUS Chief Justice, explicitly directed Reagan to tell this vicious lie in a memo, writing, "He has no way of knowing the underlying validity of the scientific 'conclusion'" & that there was "much to commend the view" that AIDS could be transmitted "casually"
Reagan & Roberts and so many others contributed to the stigmatization of so many people, including children, already suffering from a cruel & fatal disease. Hemophiliac children had written to Reagan, begging for help. You can read Roberts' full memo here: science.org/content/articl…
In response to the question about parents who had bullied HIV+ children out of school, Reagan said: "I'm glad I'm not faced with that problem today . . the child is now an outcast and can no longer associate with his playmates and schoolmates. . ."
Reagan continued, ". . .It is true that some medical sources had said that this cannot be communicated in any way other than the ones we already know. . .yet medicine has not come forth unequivocally and said, 'This we know for a fact, that it is safe."
Reagan concluded, "And until they do, I think we just have to do the best we can with this problem," thus condemning every victim of HIV/AIDs to further social stigma. Government scientists were appalled and responded the next day
Note that John Roberts, who advised Reagan to deny the science in defiance of government scientists, later justified striking down the Voting Rights Act based on the false premise that racism was no longer a problem in the relevant states.
It's also worth noting the legal aspects of this, which can get lost in just how immoral it was. Whether HIV+ children could get kicked out of school was a *legal* issue, upon which scientific evidence & children's rights should have had ultimate bearing
The most generous interpretation of Roberts' reasoning, which is still horrific, is that he disregarded science to protect Reagan at all costs. The less generous interpretation is that Roberts was also guided by bigotry. Either way, he disregarded science & the rights of children
The Reagan Admin didn't just ignore HIV/AIDS, they actively increased stigma around the disease & trashed people's basic rights. This wasn't due to mere ignorance. The belief w/in the conservative movement was that HIV/AIDs was divine retribution, a disease "degenerates" deserved
Jerry Falwell & his "Moral Majority" played a large role in both of Reagan's elections. In 1984, the LGBTQ community were a target. Falwell's group advocated to "investigate, document and expose the gay conspirators whose goal is to completely legitimize homosexuality in America"
Falwell was also the closing speaker at the 1984 RNC. 1 year later, after Reagan had won, Roberts wrote his memo advising Reagan to lie about the science & deny children their rights. Falwell remained a figure in the upper eschelons of the GOP, saying this about HIV/AIDs in 1987
This was, again, the political movement John Roberts was a part of before he became Chief Justice of SCOTUS. An anti-scientific movement guided by bigotry that trashed the rights of children, fomented stigma against dying people, & has a significant amount of blood on their hands

If you want a President AOC one day, you should vote for Democrats in every election, even if you don't like them. If the conservatives continue to gain ground in the courts, none of the progressive legislative dreams you have will come to fruition for the next generation.
I know a lot of people don't want a President AOC, but that's not the point I'm making. I'm saying to the people who do: now is the time to lay the groundwork for your dreams by voting for the courts. If you refrain from this, you will achieve nothing, no matter who is POTUS.
Democrats can fight about their competing visions in the primaries to come, but, at the end of the day, no faction of the Dem party will be able to make those visions concrete if we have conservative courts. Let's build the skeleton--the courts--together, then fight from there

BBB is in flux & its outcome is unknown. So many of the provisions in it would be transformative just in and of themselves. One provision I really care about is subsidizing elderly/disabled peoples' homecare. When I tell people in rural PA about this, they light up w/ hope.
People literally act as if I've electrified them w/ just this *one* policy alone. It's a testament to how much they have to care for disabled &/or elderly relatives & how that has impacted their own economic opportunities. I also meet so many who are confined at home, themselves
Also, for folks on twitter: BBB recognizes GenX, Millennials, & Gen-Z will all be "sandwich" generations. Many of us are personally in debt. The cost of childcare is prohibitive, as is the cost of eldercare. We will all be tasked w/ the pull between children, work, & our parents

Omicron wave: Hospitals will be just as, if not more strained, than before. Boosted, non-vulnerable people don't have to live in extreme fear re: their personal health, tho they should be cautious. Everyone will likely be affected by extreme disruptions in societal functioning.
The sheer number of *mild* breakthrough cases, in combo w/ more severe cases, will mean worker shortages unlike what we've seen before. This will impact individual businesses & the supply chain. Schools are going to be a hot mess.
Don't freak out about your own health if you're boosted. Yes, be cautious, but you have a lot of protection. Of course you also need to protect those around you. That said, *everyone* needs to prepare in a non-frantic way for the worker shortages.

Omicron:
Will likely be devastating to unvaxxd people
Will harm hospitals & medical workers
Will cause other worker shortages
Will put kids & immunocompromised people in danger
This is all awful
If you are a vaxx'd adult w/o immunocompromise, you're in a relatively safe position
Everyone should wear an N95, ensure they are boosted, etc. Your personal health is fairly well assured thru boosters. You still want to maintain maximum protection for yourself & for others thru masking. I would also try to avoid other things that could land you in the hospital
The boosters work. Protect yourself and others by masking & taking precautions & remember, our immune systems recognize this now. They are fighting Omicron. Your body has a power it didn't have in 2020. It has *some* immunity. Be very careful, but don't be terrified.

That’s not to say that the government has done a perfect job, but we have free vaccines and if everyone would do what the government has been pleading with them to do for 10 months and get vaccinated we’d all be in a much better position
I have no idea, frankly none, why anyone is choosing to undermine the government *as a whole* when what we need is people to more carefully listen to the government’s solution to the problem which is a *vaccine.*

It's ironic that the creators of Don't Look Up are also caricatures in the crisis. Obama got the globe to sign a climate change agreement. Trump abandoned it. Don't look at that difference. Biden's pushing climate change legislation that the GOP opposes. Don't look at that either
The Paris Climate Accord is in no way perfect, but it was still a big deal. And Build Back Better would also make a big difference. Both are more meaningful than a star-studded film. Yet the climate warriors behind that film are actively discouraging advocating for such action.
"Don't Look Up" satirized politicians' response to climate change, as well as the press's. Maybe it would have been a more successful satire if it had included political hipsters. Those who believe posturing in favor of a good cause is more valiant than actually fighting for it.
