Addressing availability problems for #dapps and their underlying #blockchains will be an important challenge for security architects in 2022. Right now we have a prime example of what a single dapp can do to a sidechain like @0xPolygon. What's going on? (1/6)
If you tried using #Polygon today, you will have noticed that the gas prices have spiked 10x from their usual level. (2/6)
Investigating further shows, that there is a single contract responsible for more than 50% of the gas fees right now! This must be a really important contract to warrant such a lot of transactions... Right? Right?! (3/6)
Well, taking a closer look at the contract shows, that it belongs to a new game called Sunflower Farmers. Looks like any other #farming#simulator out there to me. Why does this thing consume such a lot of gas ⛽️? (4/6)
Turns out that the developers considered it a good idea to store the current game state of each player on the blockchain - every 25 minutes! And, who would have guessed, a new monetary incentivized farming game attracted a ton of bots trying to extract value as well. (5/6)
Those two factors combined led to a significant congestion on the #Polygon network, driving gas fees up for everyone. A great show case for a decentralized #DDoS attack on a public blockchain. Time to grab some 🍿 and watch how this plays out over the coming days. (6/6)
