NPR just announced that my @npratc co-host @nprAudie will be leaving for other adventures at the end of this week. We’ve been friends for 20 years, since long before we were cohosts or even NPR reporters. That won’t change. But this one stings.
She opened doors for me in so many ways and taught me so many things - not least how to be a host. It has been difficult this year to say goodbye to @nprgreene@lourdesgnavarro@NoelKing@RadioMirage and more. If NPR doesn’t see this as a crisis, I don’t know what it’ll take.
I had hoped it wouldn’t be necessary to repost this tweet again so soon (and you can add @NoelKing to this list).
Right now the most important thing is to spend the rest of the week celebrating @nprAudie, her accomplishments, and her incredible tenure at @npr - from covering the South to Congress to hosting @NPRWeekend and @npratc to launching #ConsiderThis. Then let’s fix what’s broken.
I’m on vacation and not planning on staying glued to twitter or email. If you’re a journalist writing about this, I’ll sing Audie’s praises to the end of time but refer you to @isalara at NPR comms for comment on why we’re hemorrhaging hosts from marginalized backgrounds.

Good morning, Shapiro School students! We've just posted the current events discussion for week 8, about where our food comes from. Check back later for the video introducing the topic for week 9!
Tomorrow we'll post the "Introduction To Moral Philosophy" conversation with @krupaddesai. (Or as I like to think of it, "The Good Place" lesson.) If you haven't already, watch this intro video and join in the conversation with the hashtag #ShapiroSchool!
If this thread is the first you've heard of #ShapiroSchool, I'm teaching my 5th grade niece & nephew in Seattle #homeschool current events classes with contributions from friends, and we're posting all the lessons at shapiroschool.org to help meet your #homeschooling needs!
The coda to @NPRKelly's interview with @SecPompeo is shocking. As described on @npratc: He screamed, swore at her, and said she couldn't find Ukraine on a map. He ordered staffers to bring a blank map. She pointed to Ukraine and thanked him for his time. npr.org/2020/01/24/798…
For the record, this colleague of mine is the same @NPRKelly who started the week anchoring 14 hours of live impeachment coverage as a solo host. I’m full of awe and gratitude.
What was it @SecPompeo said to @NPRKelly as he was shouting and swearing at her? “People will hear about this?”
Marta Alarcon's roadside stand has become a makeshift refuge for Venezuelans on the road. People write notes on bolivars, Venezuelan currency made worthless by hyperinflation. She hangs them from the ceiling of her shop like flags. #LeavingVenezuela
"I don't read them because it makes me too sad," Alarcon told me. "I say, let's talk about nice things. About how your life where you're going will be better." #LeavingVenezuela
