"On December 30th, a fire got out of control super quickly. Winds carried the fire and burned a town and a half down. It breaks my heart. I used to live there."
- @TheWeatherMegan
"Even though weather drives fire season, what sets the scene for something like this to happen is the climate of the area. ... We set a record in 2021 for the longest days without snow. It basically became a tinderbox for any fires."
- @TheWeatherMegan
"There's no such thing as fire season anymore in Colorado."
- @TheWeatherMegan
"I've never seen a wildfire burn down an entire town in December in Colorado. It just doesn't happen."
- @TheWeatherMegan
Question from @b2barber, who lost his home in the fire: "What are some technologies that could help us defend against these new bigger super fires?"
"It's sad and horrible, but the best thing we can do is prepare, have a go-bag ready" - @TheWeatherMegan
The Wildland-Urban Interface in the Colorado Front Range is an emerging source of risk and study for how fires can quickly shift from trees to cities. It's an point of active interest to local scientists, some of whom lost their homes: csfs.colostate.edu/wildfire-mitig…

Scientists have found a network of cracks beneath a previously-stable ice shelf abutting the Thwaites glacier, and now think the shelf could shatter in 3 to 5 years.
That would triple the rate of ice loss from Thwaites, the "doomsday glacier".
Almost five years ago, I wrote a feature story on Thwaites, and called it "one of the most important scientific questions facing the world today":
Starting today! I'm excited to announce a partnership:
Sign up for climate-positive banking at @joinatmos and get $25 off your @currently membership. That's six months free of our white glove weather service + a bank account that reverses global warming.
I've been using @joinatmos for a few months now and I have to say, it's so encouraging to know that my money is being used to fight for climate justice while it's just sitting there. For someone obsessed with climate, it's exactly what I was looking for.
After several chats with the founders, it made sense to work together — we share a mission of fundamental, structural change in the systems that have created the climate emergency.
Banking is a leading enabler of climate destruction, and Atmos wants that to stop.
These are both core team positions, full-time, with great benefits. If you've been wanting a career working on climate change, this might be your dream job.

1⃣ Shift climate storytelling away from inevitable apocalypse towards the possibility of a better world; towards catastrophic success not catastrophic failure.
2⃣ Build a vision of irresistible justice that puts people at the center and advocates for anti-racism, anti-capitalism, anti-fascism and upholds the truth that we are all integral parts of the same living planet.
Here’s a thread on why financial institutions need to make promises for ZERO Fossil Fuels and not just “net-zero” (by @ZanageeArtis of @ThisIsZeroHour w/ info from @ciel_tweets) (1/7)
There are too many loopholes in net-zero for it to be adequate for climate justice. Net-zero allows companies and banks to shroud their impacts on emissions and continued expansion of fossil fuels @ZanageeArtis@ciel_tweets (2/7) ciel.org/reports/too-ma…
The “net” in net-zero refers to the idea that while some greenhouse gas emissions continue, natural or artificial sinks absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, resulting in zero overall emissions. @ZanageeArtis@ciel_tweets (3/7)
As world leaders prepare to debate our collective futures at #cop26 in Scotland, I’m proud to publish this personal essay from @ChimikaCha in Chongwe, Zambia.
Water is a fundamental human right. This is what inequality and climate change looks like.
@ChimikaCha Southern Zambia, like many places on the frontlines of the climate emergency, has struggled with increasingly erratic rainfall in recent years.
That’s increased the gap between the haves and have-nots down to the neighborhood level in places like Chongwe.
Fiske Nyirongo’s investigated the local scale as water divides her community. "Is there resentment brewing silently between the two groups? Will this town be used one day as an example of what happens when more pronounced inequalities due to climate change are not handled early?"
