1) AG Garland on Capitol riot: As of today, we have arrested and charged more than 725 defendants, in nearly all 50 states and the District of Columbia, for their roles in the January 6th attack. In charging the perpetrators, we have followed well-worn prosecutorial practices.
2) Garland: Those who assaulted officers or damaged the Capitol face greater charges.

Those who conspired with others to obstruct the vote count also face greater charges.”

The actions we have taken thus far will not be our last.
3) Garland: The Justice Department remains committed to holding all January 6th perpetrators, at any level, accountable under law — whether they were present that day or were otherwise criminally responsible for the assault on our democracy.
4) Garland: We will follow the facts wherever they lead.

We understand that there are questions about how long the investigation will take, and about what exactly we are doing.
5) Garland: Our answer is, and will continue to be, the same answer we would give with respect to any ongoing investigation: as long as it takes and whatever it takes for justice to be done -- consistent with the facts and the law.
6) Garland: I understand that this may not be the answer some are looking for. But we will and we must speak through our work. Anything else jeopardizes the viability of our investigations and the civil liberties of our citizens.

1) This has the potential to be a donnybrook.

Fox is told that the House Republican leadership isn’t buying the assessment made by US Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger that the force has made significant improvements since the riot last year.
2) One GOP source said it is “very difficult to reconcile” what Manger is saying publicly about security upgrades when it flies in the face with some of what has been said by the USCP Inspector General Michael Bolton.
3) Republicans note that USCP have still not implemented 64 out of 104 security recommendations.

The source suggested that either Bolton isn’t being truthful or Manger isn’t being truthful.

A) From colleague Tara Prindiville. USCP Union Chairman, Gus Papathanasiou: “We’ve never seen a threat environment like this and given the profound division in this country, this may very well be our new normal.”
B) Papathanasiou: “My biggest fear right now is a lack of manpower to meet the rising threat levels. The USCP is authorized to have 2,072 officers. On January 6th we were 233 officers below that level."
C) Papathanasiou: “They are exhausted. The lack of manpower and increased daily mission requirements mean officers now face ongoing 6-7 day work weeks and constant double shifts. Our officers believe in their mission, but there is a breaking point.”

1) Schumer to fellow Dems:
One year ago this week, we experienced great sorrow: mere hours after the dawn of a new Congress and a new Majority, our beloved Capitol was attacked. It was attacked in a naked attempt to derail our Republic’s most sacred tradition:
2) Schumer: The peaceful transfer of power. Domestic violent extremists sought to inflict chaos and violence. Fueled by conspiracy and the ravings of a vengeful former President, they sought to destroy our Republic.

Our democracy held – for now.
3) Schumer: Much like the violent insurrectionists.. Republican officials in states across the country have seized on the former president’s Big Lie about widespread voter fraud to enact anti-democratic legislation

1) In 2013, the government was in the middle of a 16-day shutdown over Obamacare.

It was a Saturday evening and the Senate just wrapped for the day. No end to the shutdown was in sight. I was the last reporter leaving the Capitol.
2) As I came to the first floor elevators near the Senate Carriage Entrance, Reid materialized. He too was heading home. Reid knew I visited Vegas a few times by that point. I asked how he was doing and mentioned I needed a vacation once the government was funded again.
3) I told Reid of one of my favorite restaurants in Las Vegas: Lotus of Siam. It’s a well-known Thai restaurant located off the Strip. The restaurant is in a different location now. But at the time, Lotus of Siam occupied a spot in a run-down strip mall.

1) In 2008 session with the press, Reid scolded journalists for not grasping the nuances of a parliamentary tactic on energy legislation. Reid admonished the scribes that they should “watch the floor more often. You might learn something.”
2) Minutes later, another reporter still wasn’t clear on Reid’s procedural plan. The Nevada Democrat asked the reporter if she “spoke English” and questioned whether she was hard of hearing.

“Turn up your Miracle-Ear,” Reid berated the reporter.
3) Even visitors to the Capitol weren't immune to Reid’s umbrage.

“In the summertime, because of the high humidity and how hot it gets here, you could literally smell the tourists coming into the Capitol,” Reid said during the 2008 dedication of the Capitol Visitor’s Center.
