Some people just seem to have more success than others...

Why? –– I think I've figured it out.

It all comes down to these 6 things: 🧵
Networking:

We've all heard the cliché...

"It's now what you know, it's who you know."

It's true––but there's more to it.

You need people that will PUSH you.

You need people that will call you out.

You need people who will kick you in the ass and get you moving!

👇🏻
Be intentional.

You become what (and who) you're surrounded by––good or bad.

Is your inner circle satisfied with the status quo?

Content with "going through the motions?"

Soon enough, you will be too.

Seek people who propel you forward, run from those that hold you back.
Excuses:

Successful people don't make them.

It's really that simple.

This doesn't mean everything will always go right––far from it.

It means when things go wrong you pivot, you adjust, you find another way.

What you don't do is blame someone or something else.

👇🏻
Excuses serve no meaningful purpose other than delaying the inevitable.

You need to solve the problem.

Successful people don't waste time placing blame, they take action.

If the ship is sinking, plug the holes.

They'll be time enough for finding out how they got there later.
Consistency:

You've got to stick around long enough to find out if what you're doing is going to work.

Successful people show up.

Day after day, week after week, year after year.

They keep grinding.

They bet on themselves.

They believe when no one else does.

👇🏻
Case in point:

James Dyson:
•5,127 failed prototypes before his 1st working design.

Walt Disney:
•Fired by a Missouri newspaper for "not being creative enough."

Elvis Presley:
•Told by his manager after his 1st paying gig, "You ain't goin' nowhere son."

Persevere & Persist h/t @jackbutcher
Failures:

Yes, successful people are failures.

In fact, they have probably failed more times than the average person has tried.

The difference is that successful people view failure differently.

Not as a reason to stop––but as a reason to learn.

A reason to keep going.

👇🏻
Failure is part of the success formula.

A key ingredient for understanding how you can improve.

It's all in how you frame it.

Choose to view failure as a setback––it will be.

Choose to view it as an opportunity for growth––it can be that too.

The choice is yours.
Decisive / Active:

Successful people are decisive.

They make the call, move forward, and take action.

They understand, the greatest enemy of progress is stagnation.

Their greatest fear is complacency.

Above all else, they keep moving––even when they don't feel like it.

👇🏻
They press on.

They're not imprisoned by doubt.

They're emboldened by progress.

Every single step forward outweighs any missteps that have occurred along the way.

There will always be bumps in the road, the point isn't to avoid them all, the point is to keep driving.
Gratitude:

The most successful people I know are thankful.

They understand, appreciate, and (most importantly) haven't forgotten where they came from.

They take time to acknowledge those who helped them get where they are now.

They consciously work on paying it forward.

👇🏻
They give back.

They lift others up.

They bring them along for the ride.

Successful people aren't greedy with their knowledge or experience.

They delight in teaching others and watching them succeed as well.

These steps aren't complex––you've just got to take them.

Humans have a tendency to believe things that aren't true.

Especially upon repeated exposure.

It's called the "Illusory Truth Effect"

A thread on why it happens –– and how you can overcome it: 🧵
First, some background...

In 1977, researchers from Villanova and Temple were the first to coin the term.

Over a five-week period, separated into 3 sessions, participants were given a list of 60 statements.

Their task?

Determine what was true & what was false.
In each session, 40 statements were unique, while the remaining 20 were repeated from the previous rounds.

Over the course of the three meetings, researchers noticed an interesting trend...

7 phrases smart people don't say: 🧵
"This is the way we've always done it."

So what?

Does that mean it can't be improved?

Whatever "it" is, there are always aspects that can be made more clear, efficient, and simple.

At best, it makes you sound lazy.

At worst, you'll be left behind.

Ideate, innovate, repeat.
"That's not in my job description"

No one ever got ahead by doing the bare minimum.

Yes –– maybe the task you've been asked to complete isn't technically part of your role.

Do it anyway.

Recognition may not come as soon as you would like, but it will come.

If not, move on.

In 2005 we saw one of the greatest commencement speeches of all time.

No –– it wasn't at Stanford and it wasn't Steve Jobs.

9 Lessons we can learn from David Foster Wallace's "This is Water" 🧵
"The most obvious realities are the ones that are often the hardest to see."

Sometimes, we're so deeply entrenched in something –– shall we say –– "swimming" in it, we're unable to see clearly.

Other times, we simply haven't acquired enough knowledge.

Step back, give it time.
"A huge percentage of the stuff that I tend to be certain of is, it turns out, totally wrong."

At our core, our beliefs are heavily influenced by who we are, where we're from, & how we were raised.

This leads to a kind of "built-in" self-centeredness.

Step outside of yourself.

TIME named it one of its "50 worst inventions" in 2010.

Daily Mail called it "the ugliest shoe ever invented."

Since 2009, Crocs has over 12.8 Billion in revenue and 300M pairs sold.

THREAD: How a foam boating clog became a global sensation.
1/ It's November 2002, and George Boedecker, Jr., Lyndon Hanson III, and Scott Seamans are headed to a boat show.

The Ft. Lauderdale international boat show to be specific.

Why? To market their new product.

A foam boating clog...

Sounds exciting right?
2/ Rewind to a few months earlier:

While on a sailing trip, Boedecker and Seamans had come across a new style of boating clog.

The shoe, then produced by a Canadian company called, "Foam Creations, Inc." had several advantages over current offerings.
