Good question by many. I don’t know if it’s Omicron. Agree that it looks out of place in the tweet. But the overall point stands — Omicron isn’t necessarily mild. That impression must be dispelled.

Thread on what happened, as I understand it. In the absence of official information, here's the best I can do at this time:

After Lt Gen-level talks 10 days ago, *token* disengagement had begun - few tents. Last week, a camp that had been removed by Chinese was brought back. 1/n
CO & group of men (unarmed) went to the camp to tell Chinese to follow disengagement plan, quickly came under attack with stones. Chinese soldiers assaulted with barbed wire clubs etc. CO grievously hurt, removed immediately. Remaining soldiers surrounded, held by Chinese. 2/n
By sunset, CO succumbs to injuries + unarmed Indian men still held by Chinese. Indian Major & more go to camp, armed with their own melee weapons. Come under attack, fight back hard. Casualties inflicted among Indian captive men + several on Chinese side too. 3/n

BIG BREAKING: Indian Army Colonel (Commanding Officer of an infantry battalion) and 2 Army jawans killed in action during a clash with Chinese troops at one of the standoff points in the Galwan Valley, Ladakh. Details awaited.
Statement from Indian Army confirms the 3 deaths. Horrifying news from Ladakh:
Two updates: Casualties on both sides (unclear what nature/numbers on Chinese side). No bullets fired, clash was with stones and clubs. Several injured. Will update.

Vikram Lander appears intact but tilted, says @ISRO, efforts continue to establish contact. (Question now is whether blackout is due to system damage or orientation — or both). #ISROSpotsVikram
Sources at @ISRO who share the above information also point out that orbiter visual of the Vikram Lander isn’t enough to establish internal structural integrity, only superficial. High velocity landing likely to have damaged systems. But effort still on to see if he’ll ‘wake up’.
Don’t think anyone should get their hopes up. The chances of reviving/re-establishing communications with the Vikram Lander are very remote according to nearly all experts, and even with the @ISRO. But that’s the thing about space — you do everything you can, and then hope. 🌓🇮🇳
