Last week, @DCHospitalAssoc asked Mayor Bowser if she would issue a new health emergency as hospitals are very stressed right now: dcist.com/story/22/01/06…

Bowser is still evaluating that request, but expects to take administrative actions so hospitals can act nimbly.
.@Pash_DC confirms that at-home rapid tests are not included in COVID-19 case counts. Why? "It really has to do with data integrity," he said. "No way of validating that data."

From October 15 to January 7, 59K rapid test results reported, 6,728 self-reported positive cases.
For those wondering about DC Health director LaQuandra Nesbitt, mayor says she is on planned leave. She accumulated a lot of time over the last year or so. She will return later this month.
DC hospitals are tracking primary versus incidental covid admissions, says DC Health. The hospitals provide that data to DC Health. DC Health is working to make that information publicly available.
More context on rapid tests: That DC tracks at-home test results via a portal is unique nationally.

Places like Chicago see rapid as a helpful diagnostic tool for residents but don't include em in official case counts. Cases are undercounted everywhere.

Council-exec call 🧵

Did DC apply for the Federal Pilot Community Vaccination Centers? Sounds like a no. Bowser admin says "We don't need FEMA’s help running these sites, we just need more vaccine."

Info on this: fema.gov/disasters/coro…
How much is DC Health relying on hospitals & health centers to book appoints for their patients? It used to be 30/40% to portal and individual hospitals. Now DC Health leans on vaccinate.dc.gov. GW and Howard are using portal. Looking to on board more hospitals.
Will DC release total dose delivered data? Yes, this Monday. DC Health's Dr. Shah says the first dose metric is losing value cuz J&J vaccine, so they were looking to drop this. DC will try to include fed partnership doses.

"Above all stay home," says Mayor Bowser.

@DCPoliceDept has been deployed to assist United States Capitol Police in restoring order to capitol, mayor says. MPD will lead the command to clear the Capitol building and establish a perimeter.

Thread on presser.
D.C.'s brand new Police Chief, Robert Contee, confirms one civilian sustained a gunshot in the Capitol. Details not immediately avail.
Mayor Bowser says she requested National Guard assistance a few days ago and it was approved by secretary of the army. The United States Capitol Police requested additional assistance today. There was some confusion at first but ultimately DC National Guard was 100% activated.

Sean Blackmon w/ Stop Police Terror Project & PSL leads “defund police” chant near WH.

Right before, he named D’Quan Young, Jeffrey Price, Marqueese Alston, & more black individuals killed by DC police. “Those police murders, it happened under her watch,” he says of DC mayor.
Downtown DC is pretty remarkable today. Organic marches down 7th & Pennsylvania Ave NW. Folks passing out free water bottles & PB&J. So many bikers and babies! So many things to love about the city today. Image
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that the intense military presence and sounds of sirens amid BLM chants ... kill the vibe.

I’ll be in Shreveport, Louisiana today through Friday to cover the @ReproRights lawsuit before SCOTUS.

If you have questions, ideas, or recommendations for food, let me know!
Transcribing my interviews from today and my god, the activism in Louisiana is incredible.
"Supporters of abortion rights should care deeply about this case because what it shows is a court does not need to overturn Roe to effectively extinguish the right to abortion," @ReproRights counsel said about this lawsuit: thinkprogress.org/supreme-court-…
SCOTUS decision expected 2day.
