2/ Note Baldwin's facial expression. What do you see?

• He's 'Smiling' out of one side of the mouth

3/ This is NOT a Sincere Smile (not a Duchenne Smile).
How can we tell this his 'smile' is insincere smile? What characteristics are displayed and betrayed here?

4/ Sometimes, when a sincere smile is just beginning, being suppressed, or crescendoing/ending — true smiles will occasionally be more prominent on one side, but in general, unilateral smiles should always be suspect — a signal to look deeper — what else do you see?

• The primary emotion Baldwin is displaying (and feeling) is CONTEMPT.
• Note his Snarl appearance — the tightening of the area above the upper lip and beneath the nose (aka, the 'mustache area').
• Note also, his flared nostrils.

• The presence of 'Crow's Feet' on the outside (lateral aspects) of the eyelids should NEVER be used as an indicator of the sincerity of a smile. Why?

Because:

A. While 'smiling eyes' may very well have crow's feet, not all crow's feet are indicative of smiling eyes.

7/ B. Beyond a certain age, most all people have passive crow's feet (crow's feet with a neutral/resting face).

C. There are many emotions which have 'Crow's Feet', as a component of their corresponding facial expressions (i.e., Anger, Contempt, Disgust, lower levels of/suppressed Fear, Disbelief, etc.,), and...

D. Both Fake Smiles and Sincere Smiles will have Crow's Feet.

9/ Also, note Baldwin's Lower Eyelids:

• Although his eyelids are partially closed (which is absolutely one of the requirements of a sincere/Duchenne Smile), Baldwin's lower eyelids are not relaxed, they're tense.

10/ • With a sincere smile, the lower eyelids should each have (and this is crucial) ONE PRIMARY concave-up furrow. But Baldwin's lower eyelids are not smiling, they are tense — thus they have multiple smaller furrows/multiple undulations.

11/ This point cannot be over-emphasized: Tense eyelids (angry, aggressive eyelids) have multiple ridged, roughly equal-intensity furrows — while sincere, relaxed, and smiling lower eyelids will have one deep, primary furrow with adjacent, smaller wrinkles.

12/ And NO, that's NOT 'just the way he smiles'. This is contempt masquerading as a false smile. Don't be fooled.

13/ FACT: The two most common emotions displayed by Nazi Concentration Camp Commanders and Staff during WWII were:

• Disgust
• Contempt

Why? Because Nazis believed others were beneath them. Nazis believed others were less than human.

14/ Contempt, particularly if chronically projected, is the most harmful emotion.

15/ Without even touching you directly, it will lead to real harm — both psychologically and physiologically (with increased incidence of many diseases/conditions).

Anyone with an abusive spouse, partner, or parents unfortunately knows this firsthand.

16/ Use this thread as one guide to help you differentiate 'angry eyes' w/ fake smiles (exactly as Scott Baldwin is displaying here) — vs. true smiles (sincere/Duchenne).
