1. 8K+ @kroger workers are on strike today in Colorado

According to a new study, as Kroger earns billions in profits, 2 out of 3 Kroger workers don't earn enough to pay basic expenses

@kroger 2. Over the last decade @kroger, profits are up 102% and CEO pay is up 150%.

Inflation-adjusted wages for frontline workers, however, are down 3-5%.

3. The CEO of @kroger, Rodney McMullin, made $22 million in 2020. That's 909x the salary of the median worker.

4. Kroger offered its Colorado workforce a starting wage of $16/hour.

But that's just 13 CENTS above the minimum wage in Denver, where many of its stores are located.

5. In March 2020, @kroger gave it's workers a $2/hour increase, calling it a "hero bonus"

"We will continue to support you, and your families, during this difficult time."

Kroger rolled back the bonus 2 months later

6. Today, @kroger requires these "heroes" to submit a PCR test to qualify for paid time off due to COVID. Since PCR tests can take days, many workers w/symptoms feel pressure to report to work.

7. While frontline workers expose themselves to danger and deal w/belligerent customers, corporations like @kroger are profiting

"I think the tragedy is that we have a Congress with a Senate that has a minority of misguided senators who will use the filibuster to keep the majority of people from even voting" -- MLK Jr.
Here is a video of King's statement, from July 5, 1963

"The strategic position of these men, as chairmen of the most important committees in House and Senate, enable them to filibuster and to bottle up legislation urgently needed for the economic and social welfare of all Americans, Negro and white." -- MLK Jr., 2/12/58

NEW: @ATT will stop carrying the far-right @OANN on its @DIRECTTV subsidiary.

@ATT responsible for 90% of OANN's revenue

OANN relentlessly pushed Trump's false claims that the election was stolen

popular.info/p/how-at-and-t…
@ATT @OANN @DIRECTTV “We informed Herring Networks that, following a routine internal review, we do not plan to enter into a new contract [with @OANN] when our current agreement expires,” DirectTV said in an emailed statement to Bloomberg News.

@ATT @OANN @DIRECTTV Popular.info first asked @ATT if they would continue to carry @OANN last February.

This was their response:

1. Last year, 111 companies declared they opposed state laws restricting voting & were “willing and ready to unite in the fight to protect our democracy”

So do they support Biden's push to reform the filibuster and protect voting rights?

We asked.

popular.info/p/the-silence-…
2. Only two companies, @patagonia and @richer_poorer, told us they supported reforming the filibuster to protect voting rights.

A few told us they supported voting rights generally.

Most have gone completely silent.

@patagonia @richer_poorer 3. Why does this matter? Corporations have historically played an important role in overcoming Republican opposition to voting rights.

In 2006, @Walmart, @Disney and other companies helped convince President Bush to extend the Voting Rights Act

1. The author of an anti-CRT bill in Indiana told a high school history teacher that he should remain "impartial" on Nazism.

This got a fair bit of attention but I want to highlight one way this bill is at the vanguard on the anti-CRT movement

popular.info/p/author-of-an…
2. The bill, authored by Scott Baldwin, requires "educators to separately post all classroom curricula online for parents — including lesson plans, worksheets, presentations and other materials."

This is presented as an effort to provide "transparency"

popular.info/p/author-of-an…
3. But it is also following the playbook of @realchrisrufo, who created much of the anti-CRT hysteria.

Rufo is encouraging state lawmakers to push for "transparency" so he can weaponize decontextualized snippets of curriculum

1. One common reaction to our investigation into @redlobster is that it's "not just Red Lobster" that doesn't provide paid sick leave to employees.

This is correct but it also misses the point.

Follow along if interested.

popular.info/p/red-lobster-…
@redlobster 2. While the lack of paid sick leave in the service industry is a SYSTEMIC problem, @redlobster is among the very worst actors

50% of service workers report paid sick leave

30% of casual restaurant workers

12% of Red Lobster workers

popular.info/p/red-lobster-…
3. Keep in mind, providing paid sick leave is MANDATORY in 14 states and many cities. So the very low rate suggests that @redlobster workers have difficulty accessing paid leave even when required by law.

This is backed up by our reporting

1. As the pandemic rages on, tens of thousands of @redlobster workers lack paid sick leave

A popular.info investigation finds many @redlobster workers are being FORCED TO WORK SICK — either from financial necessity or pressure from management

popular.info/p/red-lobster-…
@redlobster 2. According to previously unreleased survey data from @shift_hks, a project based at Harvard's Kennedy School TWO-THIRDS of @redlobster workers who were sick in the Fall of 2021 reported WORKING SICK

popular.info/p/red-lobster-…
3. "We do not get sick pay. If we don’t work we don't get paid. I worry that co-workers who have been in contact with a confirmed COVID-19 family member would still come to work. We live paycheck to paycheck. We can't sit at home without pay"
