I'm reading Will Friedwald's 2017 book The Great Jazz and Pop Vocal Albums.
His 1995 book Sinatra! The Song Is You: A Singer's Art is indispensable. It won the 1996 ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for Excellence in Music Criticism.

Will Friedwald's heartbreaking story about Tony Bennett & Bill Evans. 💔
"I wanted to tell you one thing: just think truth and beauty. Forget about everything else. Just concentrate on truth and beauty, that’s all."

Friedwald is a fine writer, & has a personal connection with many of these musicians. He co-wrote Tony Bennett's 1998 autobiography. He dishes about Blossom Dearie, but his essay on My Gentleman Friend, from 1959, is such a perceptive appreciation of her art as singer & pianist.

Ray Avery took some awesome photographs of The Ronettes at Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles, 1963. Too bad most of them include Phil Spector. Here's a lovely shot: Veronica (Ronnie) Bennett, her sister Estelle, & their cousin Nedra Talley.
