More than 40 celebrities, including stars from Game of Thrones & Succession, released a joint letter endorsing Emma Watson’s message of solidarity with Palestinians, which was posted on her Instagram last week. theguardian.com/film/2022/jan/…
In the letter, the signees call out Israel for being an apartheid state and voice their stance against Israel’s ongoing forced displacement of Palestinian families.
They write:
“We recognize the underlying power imbalance between Israel, the occupying power, and the Palestinians, the people under a system of military occupation and apartheid.”
“We stand against ongoing Israeli attempts to forcibly displace Palestinian families from their homes in the East Jerusalem neighborhoods of Sheikh Jarrah, Silwan and elsewhere in the occupied Palestinian territory.”
The letter was released after Israeli officials smeared Emma Watson in what is becoming a more frequent trend of outbursts following growing support for Palestinian human rights.
Prominent celebrities, journalists, and activists—including Bella Hadid, Mehdi Hassan, and Ayman Mohyeldin—were quick to defend Watson, shining a light on the absurdity of the backlash aimed at the actress for merely defending Palestinian rights.

THREAD: Israeli Soldiers Assaulted an 80-year-old Palestinian American Grandfather & Left Him Handcuffed on the Ground. He Was Found Dead the Next Morning. 🧵
1/6) As he was returning from visiting relatives early Wednesday morning, Israeli soldiers pulled Omar Abdalmajeed As'ad out of his car, blindfolded and assaulted him, and then left him to die.
2/6) Hours later, two Palestinian young men found As’ad’s body with his wrists still zip-tied.
As’ad was born in Palestine in 1941. After leaving Palestine, he lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with his children and grandchildren until he was able to return to Palestine in 2012.
Israel is planning to forcibly displace the Palestinian Salem family and give their home that they have lived in since 1951 to illegal Israeli settlers. aljazeera.com/features/2022/…
Fatma Salem, 69, was born in the home that is currently being stolen from her by an Israeli settler named Yonatan Yosef, a far-right member of the Jerusalem Municipality.
The residence in the occupied East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah is home to 11 Salem family members, including Fatma’s three sons and four grandchildren, who have also lived in the home their entire lives.
THREAD: This year, Palestinians endured unbearable atrocities at the hands of Israel and emerged—with unprecedented international solidarity—ready as ever to resist Israeli colonization and ethnic cleansing.
In 2021 Israel:
- Took the lives of hundreds of Palestinians.
- Illegally refused to provide COVID-19 vaccines to Palestinians.
- Illegally demolished Palestinian homes as part of an ethnic cleansing effort in East Jerusalem neighborhoods like Sheikh Jarrah and Silwan.
- Criminalized 6 of the most prominent human rights organizations in Palestine.
- Created a database of every Palestinian in the West Bank via mass facial recognition surveillance.
- Effectively encouraged a sharp rise in violent Israeli settler attacks.
After trying—and failing—to make living in the Palestinian town of Masafer Yatta so unbearable that Palestinian residents would leave on their own, Israel is demolishing their homes.
Israel frequently targets the town by forcing residents to evacuate during military trainings, flying low helicopters, enabling settler attacks, and refusing residents access to water and electricity.
Demolishing Palestinian homes is a war crime that Israel plans to continue not only in Masafer Yatta but Sheikh Jarrah, Al-Tur, and more if they are not stopped.
