& Sri Lanka during 500 BCE. Its language Dhivehi is a descendant of Sanskrit but now they have adopted an Arabic script. They brought Hinduism with them and soon the islands were full of temples. Sometime during 250 BCE, Ashoka sent his missionaries to the islands
who brought Buddhism with them. It remained the dominant religion till the 12th century & then Arab traders came.Along with Southeast Asia, Maldives also eclipsed from India’s sphere of influence.

After the 16th century,Portuguese, Dutch and British had quite an influence over the islands (actual status: Protectorate)& got freedom in 1953.

Like other Islamic countries, it does not have a thriving democracy and frequently lapses into violence. The only silver lining is that India wields some influence on these islands.
