How to learn #SEO by doing SEO (and not just reading about it)

A thread of useful resources + random thoughts to help newcomers:
Best way to learn SEO (IMHO) is to give it a go.

Can you ride a bike?

Did you learn by reading every book & article about bikes that you could find?

Or did you just actually get on a bike and give it a go?
If you need courses to kickstart your learning, check out free ones & resources before you drop $$$.

This is not anti-courses but...
Paid SEO courses fall into 2 camps:

1) advanced stuff you'll only get value from once you have foundations

2) stuff you can find online for free

(I like courses, but you'll learn more spending $100 on getting your own site up vs $997 on a course if you are starting from zero)
A brilliant FREE resource + roadmap put together by @aleyda to kickstart your learning

SEO is a pretty wide field to work in.

Spend some time looking at the different aspects & go after what interests you.

#SEO career plan I (accidentally) followed:

Get a job at an agency to get exposed to lots of different SEO tasks, clients, types of sites, niches etc

Create a blog & grow w/ SEO. Anything you don't understand, Google.

Once you start getting consistent results, try freelancing.
Worried about lack of experience?

Don't be. Everyone has to start somewhere.

Remember when I said you'll learn more spending $100 on getting your own site up?

Build a content site for under $100 πŸ‘‡
#SEO Advice I WISH someone had told me, then slapped me around the face & then told me again:

❌ Don't overthink picking a niche for your 1st site.

❌ Don't overthink picking a niche for your 1st site.

❌ Don't overthink picking a niche for your 1st site.

βœ… Just start.
Keyword research on a budget πŸ”‘

Map articles you write to terms people search for.

KeywordsEverwhere (chrome extension) is like $10 for a year

Combine it with Google autocomplete:

The more you know about SEO, the less you know.
Don’t neglect the basics.

Good SEO work (and a lot of stuff actually) is just doing the basics over and over again.

There are few shortcuts for putting in the time and building a solid foundation of skills.
Keep it simple.

Be consistent.

SEO is a marathon not a sprint.

Oh, and one final thing:

Good luck & have fun.

SEO is (for the most part) a pretty friendly industry to be part of & there's lots of places it can take you.

See ya in the SERPs.

( Just don't get too good and steal all my rankings πŸ˜‰ )

Topic clusters are the BEST way to skyrocket your SEO in 2022 πŸš€

Here's why everyone seems to be talking about them...
Alrighty, first things first:

βœ”οΈ Topic clusters are not a magic fix for SEO.
βœ”οΈ They don't guarantee rankings (or anything)
βœ”οΈ You can get results without using them
I just wanted to say that upfront.

This isn't one of those threads where I hype up a tactic & finish with a CTA to sign up for my email list, buy my SEO course, listen to my podcast or build play-dough statues in my honour.

Nothing wrong with those things but not my style.

Janet says things like, 'you can't have SEO without O... Janet O'.

No one knows that this means.

In her spare time, she enjoys walks on the beach, classical music and canonical tags.
2) Secret Steven

Secret Steven is making big waves & has won loads of industry awards.

Only problem is he's so secretive, no one can find him to give him his awards.

Does Wikipedia give you enough data to create a topic cluster (for a niche you know nothing about)?

Let's find out...
DISCLAIMER: If you want to build a comprehensive topic cluster, there's no substitute for proper research

BUT, that's not always possible (no budget/time, etc)

Treat this as minimum viable niche research (MVNR) which I sadly don't see catching on as the next big #SEO acronym πŸ˜…
For this example, let's build a simple content plan around the topic *personal injury lawyer*

(which I know NOTHING about)

First up, see if theres a wiki page:
