“Taking responsibility” in Johnson’s book seems to be a slippery business
He knew they were occurring
He went to some & knew they were parties
He appeared to dismiss concerns raised by others

He set the tone & culture

None of that is admitted
That isn’t taking responsibility Image
@BorisJohnson and @OliverDowden ‘s version of taking responsibility seems nominal and untruthful AND WILL NOT WASH.
“I didn’t know there were parties in breach of the law and guidance, but I am PM but as the poor victim I will take nominal responsibility whilst sacking and discipline everyone else”

Thin gruel and unbelievable.

thetimes.co.uk/article/live-b…
Should each take personal responsibility for their part? Sure.

But if the PM and law MAKER gave the appearance AND REALITY of saying this sort of event was fine then that is where prime responsibility lies.

Indeed he has repeatedly asserted they were within the rules.
HE SAID EVEN IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS EVEN THOUGH IT TURNS OUT HE WAS PRESENT AT SOME…and at a time when he and ministerial colleagues were spelling out to the public that they could not do things far FAR less than these events.

He hasn’t taken responsibility at all.
More than anything else he has failed to take responsibility that HE (not his staff or the civil service) played fast and loose with the rules whilst at the same time asserting powers over others that caused great anguish…and knowing that they did.
Then lied about it.
Responsibility my arse.

Neither he nor Dowden appear to understand the meaning of the word.

But all those who lived by the rules - the law and guidance DID take their PERSONAL responsibilities seriously. Lived by them mostly without resentment for the greater good.
So Johnson and Dowden’s thin gruel nominal responsibility won’t cut it.

And the constant slippery eel display - only going to the minimum point they hope to “get away with” until more revelations gainsay it just underline the deep character flaws in both of them.
The first thing he has to admit is that he misled the House and did so deliberately in an attempt to cover up the scale of the partying and his part in the culture.

That is taking responsibility.

Not the untruthful “I didn’t know”.
The second thing the Tory Party as a whole have to square up to (& this is right within Dowden’s job as Chairman) is they have failed right from the point of selecting a leader to put the interests of the country as a whole at the centre of their decision making.
Everything is based on a calculation of what is best for the Tory Party regardless of whether the actions and choices drives ever greater rifts within the country. Complete absence of statecraft.

And that is why they elected a leader THEY KNEW TO BE A LAZY CHANCER AND A LIAR.
It was not because they thought he would unite the country. It was obvious he would not.

It was because they CALCULATED he would win an election. Who cares about the subsequent damage.

And they have left him in place despite 176k Covid deaths.

Despite deep economic harm.
Despite now numerous examples of him lying to the house. Failing to uphold the Ministerial code.

Despite lying to the Queen.

Despite an unlawful prorogation of Parliament.

Despite running a coach and horses through our constitution.
The current Tory Party elected a chancer and has left him in place despite all this because they too are chancers.

Can we get away with it.

They too need a “Come to Jesus” moment

And not a Rees-Mogg/ Steve Baker version of Jesus either

Because they are destroying our country
As Chris Bryant points out. Sacking the more junior staff when the head proponent set the tone gave permission, overt or implied by his presence and encouragement is about as despicable as he gets.

If he (& Oliver Dowden & his Party) don’t get that then they are despicable too.

Will Reynolds SAY he checked with Johnson? Verbally? In writing? What was in that exchange?

Or will he be his loyal Labrador as Johnson is said to believe?

Did Cummings speak directly to Johnson? Terms?

This is why there should be a judge led Inquiry.
The problem is that whilst Johnson has no credibility (then there’s the hurdle of visible drinks, tables of party food etc to overcome), Cummings credibility is also pretty shot with all his Barnard Castle bollox, and the fact that he clearly wants revenge.
Those additional witnesses he says will swear under oath are likely to be very important.

Especially if the spoke directly to Johnson or witnessed Johnson be advised of the party and heard his response.

What will be interesting is if Sue Gray actively seeks them out.

“In a nutshell, this study illustrates that respiratory-only mild SARS-CoV-2 infection can lead to detrimental changes in the brain, likely mediated by inflammatory factors. Similar neuropathobiology may be shared in chemo-brain, post-ICU syndrome and ME/CFS”
Mechanisms and potential for further research and treatments also discussed
“"The findings... illustrate striking similarities between neuropathophysiology after cancer therapy and after SARS-CoV-2 infection, and elucidate cellular deficits that may contribute to lasting neurological symptoms following even mild SARS-CoV-2 infection"

Bolton NE and Cheltenham focus groups:

It isn’t just Johnson now.
“They’re all up there backing him, most of them. That’s my worry now, with the Party. ‘Oh he’s apologised, let’s just get on with the job’. No – you’ve lied about doing the job.”

“The rest of his Party, apologising and saying they are going to back him. How can you?”
“My concern is, if all the Conservatives are now standing behind him, do we have the confidence in them? Are they just going to sweep it all under the rug too?"

Everyone had voted Tory in 2019. Asked if they would vote for Boris again now, not one person put their hand up. Image

Concerns grow that scale of ‘partygate’ is now too great for Sue Gray’s inquiry | Boris Johnson | The Guardian

It should also include an Inquiry (with Inquiry Act powers) into the PM’s rôle and into security and police responses, or absence of them

theguardian.com/politics/2022/…
Jonathan Powell said his experience of Downing St was that it had been extremely difficult to take in any food or drink without exhaustive checks by the police.
He said: “I am amazed they could send someone out and come back with a suitcase full of booze. Imagine putting that through the scanner.”

I am too. Stunned. It could contain a bomb, a grenade or a load of coke (as Cummings has already pointed out was perfectly possible).

Novak Djokovic to be deported from Australia after court upholds visa cancellation | Financial Times

The Government did not rely on the details in vaccination rules and exemptions in its arguments.

Instead…
ft.com/content/5d4177…
The State argued that the tennis champion’s prominent public status and vaccination status could make him an icon for those opposed to Covid-19 control policies, whether he liked it or not.
The government’s lawyers raised Djokovic’s admission that he had attended an interview with French magazine L’Equipe last month after testing positive for Covid-19 as an example of his apparent disregard of public safety.

Is Omicron Reinfection Possible? Yes say experts including Omicron + Omicron

@Tuliodna⁩ ⁦@tomtom_m

Are data being collected systematically on reinfections (including in under 90 days) by Omicron on people previously infected with Omicron? prevention.com/health/a387582…
I was slightly startled by this suggestion given how recently the Omicron wave seems to have started even in Botswana & South Africa (Nov 2021) especially as sero studies suggested decent immunity against Omicron by Omicron infection (esp if also vaxxed).
This would suggest possible reinfection within 3 months. But no link to study, data or reports.

In the UKHSA collect data on reinfections but only counts it as such if new infection occurs >90 days from prior infection. (I’m unclear if that will change).
