THREAD: Abbott's HHS agency tried to bury a report about February's grid failure on New Year's Eve.

Many of us missed it, as was the intent. But those who lost power and lost a loved one deserve to know what happened.

It turns out it was in many ways much worse than we thought.
The report says Texans lost family members, friends and neighbors in 77 counties. Cases included:

- Hypothermia/frostbite (161)
- Carbon monoxide poisoning/fire (29)
- Medical treatment disruption (25)

Independent reports suggest this is a gross undercount & that over 700 died.
Last year we learned of the 75 yr old veteran who died when his oxygen tank failed & the 11 yr old who died under a pile of blankets in his bed.

We now know that at least 8 kids & 147 seniors—the most vulnerable among us—died, literally left in the cold to fend for themselves.

Under Greg Abbott, our gas and electricity bills are going up $20-$50 a month this winter following February’s grid failure.

Now phone and internet bills in rural communities may go up $25-$100 a month because Abbott and the PUC defunded rural telecommunications services.

1/ I'm proud of every Texan who has marched, rallied, called their state legislators & spent hours upon hours at the state capitol trying to stop this anti-voter bill from passing.

Today’s vote on SB 1 may have you doubting whether all that effort made a difference. But it did.
2/ You forced Republican lawmakers to walk back on some of SB 1's worst provisions, brought national attention to the fight for democracy in Texas, and lit a fire under Congress to make progress on legislation that can give us a fighting chance to save democracy in America.
3/ Now isn't the time to give up or give in. If we push President Biden to do everything in his power to reform the filibuster, we can pass the For the People Act & John Lewis Voting Rights Act—and roll back anti-voter laws in Texas and across the country. whitehouse.gov/contact/
