@backlon We’ll take a look. I know searching by headline is common for writers and yes, I’d expect this to show first for that. But it doesn’t reflect how most people might seek this content (and for how they might search, I do find it). But again, we’ll look to improve. ImageImage
@backlon Here's a follow-up on what's happening & what we're looking at. You do mention this, but it's not clear from the screenshot that your article is the first thing on the page (as shown). Because it's showing in Top Stories, it is getting deduplicated from the rest of the page... Image
@backlon Deduplication can often be useful. Doing this search in the way that user might by using solution-seeking terms rather than unusual terms in the headline, there you are at the top in Top Stories plus deduplicating means there's more variety from other publications.... Image
@backlon In searches like that, our systems also are going to generally seek to show the most helpful, reliable info they can. That's why you don't see a lot of duplicates of your article showing. Duplicates certainly exist, but it isn't that helpful to show them....
@backlon That leads to headline-oriented searches. As I said before, that's super common among authors. I used to do it all the time, myself. But headline searches contain typically contain a lot of terms, so our systems shift to return pages that have those terms...
@backlon This means authors are more likely to find duplicates, even though for typical searches that readers would do, these are unlikely to appear. But our deduplication feature may still kick in even for these, as was happening in this case....
@backlon As I said, deduplication can be helpful. But we also understand the concern this might be raising. We've been doing this with Top Stories since last May, but we're going to revisit this to see if we should continue or perhaps make other changes.
@backlon Also, I'm still checking, but I believe this deduplication is especially unique in that it only happens with Top Stories if there's a single story shown or perhaps only for the very first story shown.
@backlon Just to cap off with the further clarification I promised, we deduplicate a link from web results if a link appears as the first link in Top Stories and if the Top Stories box appears before web results. If it comes after, we don't. And again, it's something we're reviewing.

Spotted a @Rivian R1T pickup truck in the wild yesterday on my run. Then a few miles later, came across a second Rivian! Very cool. #rivian ImageImageImage
Have been super tempted by @Rivian as we're looking for an EV SUV when our lease comes due later this year. Love the look and range of the Rivian RIS SUV. But no lease option and I think the five seater will take longer to arrive than the seven seater. rivian.com/r1s
Top of my short list right now is the @FiskerInc Ocean, if deliveries make it by the end of the year. Looks great, love the range and the "Flexee Lease" return whenever you want is super attractive #fisker fiskerinc.com/ocean

And now some of the many costumes I saw along the way running @LondonMarathon — starting with the cupcake that passed me and left me behind. #LondonMarathon Image
The fire brigade kept us safe along the sidelines of @LondonMarathon and at one point, within the race course itself :) #LondonMarathon Image
There were rhinos and @LondonMarathon — lots of rhinos. #LondonMarathon

Spent way too much time researching air quality monitors last night. Want outdoor one to better understand what's happening in our immediate area & contribute to maps for others. Want an indoor one to understand what quality is like when we have windows shut. FWIW, my rundown....
Let's start with outdoors. Turns out we have fairly sparse network of official sensors because: expensive! But been huge growth in unofficial sensors by people wanting better local data. Some articles:

PurpleAir seems pretty much the standard for outdoors monitoring. They maintain a popular map that lets you narrow in on areas and see what other owners are reporting. I *love* that you can toggle off those reporting indoor from outdoor sensors. Map: purpleair.com/map

I finally canceled my print newspaper delivery. Been putting it on vacation hold ever since COVID-19 began, back when we were hosing down any physical objects with disinfectant. Newspapers don't hold up well with that! It finally weaned me off a print paper. Still, bit sad....
Having grown up with print, I really appreciate the fast glance to take in stories, the serendipity of what I might discover. I'm having to teach myself how to get similar things online and it still doesn't quite feel right. I'll get there...
I've definitely come to reappreciate the importance of a home page. Like, it's really important what I'm being shown, to help me discover new and interesting stuff. I'm mostly at @latimes & a slight home page design I noticed a few weeks ago helped a lot...

The family is thrilled that I've now gotten one of those pulse oximeters to take readings along with the nightly temperature checks. Thrilled! Image
Pro tip. You don't get the best reading from a pulse oximeter when trying to force your son to use it while playing a game. It's OK. He was 99% when I tried again. Image
I got the @iHealthLabsUS iHealth Air, which finally came back in stock. Syncs to my phone, easy to switch between family members. Not FDA approved as medical device though, if you're really picky. Super easy to use & displays stats even without a phone ihealthlabs.com/fitness-device…

Had lovely break this weekend to a mountain cabin, first time out in four months. That is, after we first had to clean the rental ourselves. And more fun as @vrbo still wants to charge us a cleaning fee and kicks the can on that down to @vacasarentals that they rep...
When we arrived at our @vacasarentals cabin booked thru @vrbo, nothing had been cleaned despite supposed "extra" cleaning to be done. Kitchen dirty. Floors dirty. Trash in bins all around. Bathroom, fun! So we got to work & cleaned it all ourselves and got on with our weekend.... Image
You'd think the response would be refund the cleaning fee when we had to clean ourselves. And maybe waive a night's rent or something. But after several hours on hold @vrbo said "it's up to @vacasarentals" even though @vrbo charged us. And @vacasarentals is like nope...
