NEW: Target inflation on the Consumer PRice Index measure reaches a 30 year high of 5.4% rise in December - highest rise since Bank of England became independent…
5.4% CPI is the highest since MArch 1992
On the old Retail PRices Index measure, still used in setting of some bills, public finances etc inflation reached 7.5% - highest since MArch 1991 during first Gulf War
It’s actually the highest CPI figure ever produced on record - we get to a high of just under 30 years (29 years and 9 months) by using modelled figures for the years before CPI created in 1997
ONS - December rises in food prices were the biggest contribution to monthly rise in the inflation rate
Bread, cereals, meat and veg largest, but this is broad-based 8/9 groups of food purchases up, largest contribution to monthly chance since 2008
Chancellor says: “I understand pressures people are facing with cost of living, and we will continue to listen to people’s concerns as we have done throughout the pandemic”

Points to support from Budget re Universal Credit taper, freezing duties/ targeted support on energy bills
Labour shadow Chief Sec Pat McFadden says: “Working families are already feeling the crunch. But the triple whammy of an imminent rise in the energy price cap, real wages falling and Tory tax rises coming down the tracks are going to make this crisis even worse”.
The food price hikes show that VAT on hospitality should not go back up in April, says hospitality industry:
What was happening 30 years ago? Aftermath of energy price shock after the first Gulf War… concerning thing is that all this has happened with crude oil prices only just having reached a 7 year high, and the pressures have spread to food
Coming up on #bbcnewssix

This is what the 30 year high in inflation looks like - record numbers of US liquefied natural gas tankers coming to the UK, after record prices paid by energy cos to send them to Kent and west Wales. Record prices soon to be passed on to consumers…
Record numbers of US LNG tankers arrived in UK after record European gas prices spiked 25% above Asian ones - so shale gas normally exported to China is here…including one tanker arriving in Wales yday that U-turned mid pacific going back through Panama Canal via @ICIS_energy
As I said yesterday…. 9.3% rise in BT phone bills - indexing the rise to the fact that CPI has already gone up 5.4% and adding 3.9%… see mobile phone bills too…

“I don’t think she’s got any choice. She should call him as a witness but also call any other witnesses he can bring forward who are willing to give their version of events”

Andrew Bridgen as I ask: “do you think Sue Gray should call Dominic Cummings as a witness?” #Newsnight Image

There may be no solution to the Government’s immediate energy trilemma… the hit will go well beyond the “fuel poor”. I understand that an option on a £15bn plus “Cost Deferral Mechanism” to smooth the spike over is being developed… BLOG:

bbc.co.uk/news/business-…
No decisions yet - not everyone within Whitehall nor within the energy industry are on the same page, but they will be needed fairly quickly…

Some supporters of PM arguing he will use this Cost Deferral Scheme, to relaunch his premiership
BBC has seen some plans, there are different timeframes, some include taxpayer guarantee, though not necessarily needed, some are adaptations of the last resort mechanism approved by Ofgem for keeping customers of bust companies going, another builds on BoE pandemic schemes…

Coming up @BBCNewsnight after quite a week for party politics, culminating in Number 10 apologising to the Queen @lewis_goodall unearths the guest list for the latest revealed party …. At 2230
Sir Simon Fraser, former leading diplomat told me: “this is not only a question of the behaviour of the PM.. But also civil servants who have been working at the heart of government seem to have been caught up in this series of bad decision making." #Newsnight
“how is it that they have actually been involved in not only attending, but convening these parties? I think that is an issue that is, I’m afraid, going to have to be looked at, and is damaging for the Civil Service,” said Sir Simon to me on #Newsnight

President Biden’s official White House proclamation lifting the “national security” 25% tariffs against, specifically, steel produced by current EU members (10% for aluminium), that came in to force on Saturday, whilst being left in place for now vs UK… whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/…
… language in the Biden proclamation says the US and EU have addressed the “threatened impairment of national security posed by steel imports from the EU”… then goes on to say he considered on natsec grounds whether to lift the tariffs on other countries, eg incl UK, but no.
“I have considered whether it is necessary and appropriate in light of our national security interests to make any corresponding adjustments to such tariff as it applies to other countries. I have determined it is necessary and appropriate, at this time, to maintain…” eg for UK

@jonsnowC4

simply superb colleague, fearless & relentless interrogator of truth, infectious enthusiasm for news in every corner of the world & for the development of younger colleagues. Honour to have worked with & learnt from you. gutted not to be able send you off..
Watching #JonSnow on C4N was compulsory in my household as we had our dinner in 90s Manchester…so when I met him at Granada TV conf of young people, and he wrote back to a letter asking for a job encouragingly but politely saying it wasnt “in his gift”…I pinned it by my desk…
When I joined C4N team in 2004, astonishing to find that #JonSnow was in fact entirely & exactly the same person off screen as he appeared on… like a buzzing energy ball, infecting everybody with enthusiasm to go that little bit further, & endlessly interested in all around him
