I'm at home (if they're not accepting testimony, I'll pass on unnecessary potential covid exposures at the Statehouse thank u!), but hearing that everyone *was* in the room, but Faber, Cupp, and Huffman just walked out.
Not to be lost in the drop of new regional maps from the Rs is that R commissioners keep leaving the hearing room to go huddle privately in a room off to the side and I just...
THINK TRANSPARENCY IS KEY!
It's worth noting that the only reason we know that R Commissioners keep getting up to go meet off in a bunker is bc I work with someone who's in the room.
No one streaming on the Ohio Channel (i.e. the public who can't be there in person) knows any of this.
Sen. Sykes asking for a recess until 3:30pm to review new GOP map proposals.
Sen. Pres Huffman asking if point of recess is to just respond to newly dropped maps and then will review when they come back.
Sykes says yes.
Ope jk - recessing until 4pm today.
See ya then - will try to get some analysis on those maps before then.
Gotta say that releasing 4 counties at a time is just...not cutting it at this point.
And releasing maps as PDFs is just...not cutting it at this point.
This is not the transparency we deserve. And if the process is bad, the maps are likely to be bad, too.
And we’re back!
Cupp offered a brief overview of the R maps and said (in short), “Y’all can see these PDFs online.”
Now up is Chris Glassburn, the Democrats’ mapper, who’s testifying and suggests they made concessions to Rs to try to reach compromise -unclear if that’s possible
Faber asking for competitiveness indices, so here again with a reminder that competitive in Ohio is a district that sits with 48-52% for either Ds or Rs.
Don't buy any argument (incl that on Dave's) that a 10-pt spread is competitive - it ain't!
The Sup. Ct made clear that representational fairness is key.
Concessions shouldn't be made in the fight for #FairMaps that reflect how we vote.
We won at Court - let's act like it and fight for what we deserve!
Glassburn testifies that the Dems didn't know that today would be a day to present maps.
There are so many things wrong with this process and the lack of transparency from Rs that throws everything else off (incl the impact of their maps) is really top of the list.
Huffman taking a dig at the Democrats' efforts to be as transparent as possible to ensure the public can be brought in the mapmaking process is honestly a WILD but unsurprising turn of events.
Rs should ALSO want public to see maps. Grateful Ds want us to be able to do so.
It's also worth noting that the Dems have made their mapper available for testimony.
Where is Ray DiRossi? Or Blake Springhetti? Why aren't they also available to provide testimony about how/why they drew R maps the way they did?
You know what would be SUPER HELPFUL in these conversations about how best to treat communities in Ohio?
GIVING US A CHANCE TO TESTIFY OURSELVES!
Let us come tell you whether proposed maps protect our communities!
HELLO! HI! HEY!
As the Court rightfully said, political geography is NOT an excuse to gerrymander. And even if you take Ohio's political geography into acct, nothing can explain the GOP's invalidated map aside from what they were: partisan gerrymanders!
Faber's line here is BS
Now there's a squabble about when the deadline is.
FWIW, the Ohio Rules of Practice dictates that deadlines that end on Saturday (like the Ct's does this Saturday) move to the next non-holiday Monday. Not sure why we're going with this Saturday, but if we are...LFG!
Let me again say that what the OH Sup Ct held is that IF it is possible (and it is!) to meet BOTH the community split rules AND ALSO the anti-partisan gerrymandering rules, the Commission MUST DO SO.
Not try. Must do it. It is possible. We just need political courage to do it.
Don't settle.
Don't cheat.
Give us #FairMaps we deserve and the Court ordered we are due.
The Comm'n in recess until 9:30am tomorrow and the call of the chairs (so maybe later tonight? Who knows?!)
My goodness...what a show.
Solid point here from redistricting super star @CatherineTurcer - the reason the Commission didn’t adjourn is because they haven’t provided us with 24 hours’ notice of their next meeting (happening in 16 hours 😵💫😵💫😵💫).
We cannot out organize partisan and racial gerrymandering.
We cannot out organize rampant voter suppression laws.
Our democracy needs a lifeline. And so do we.
As someone who has spent her career organizing in a state that is an unfortunate trailblazer in voter suppression laws and gerrymandering and which has suffered under the devastating impacts of both of those, I cannot possibly overstate how desperately we need that lifeline.
How infuriating to find ourselves begging for our elected officials at various levels to stand up for our democracy and to deliver a lifeline of protection to preserve our most fundamental American right.
And how exhausting that we still have to put up such a fight.
(Not so?) Fun fact: Rep. Russo is Minority Leader-Elect because the House hasn't been in session and, thus, an official vote hasn't been held to swear her into this role.
Glad she's serving on the Comm'n, tho, bc she'll be a strong champ for #FairMaps!
Compromise isn’t what our reforms were about, it’s about fair districting. We’re not here to compromise on our rights to be adequately represented; we’re here for actually #FairMaps.
If that’s not what the GOP is offering, no one owes them bipartisan support. Period.
LaRose is right to say people should pick their politicians (not the other way around), but I’ll be curious to see how far he goes to fight for the transparent process we demanded in our reforms.
So far, we’re convening this commission just 26 days before the first deadline. 😑
This interview was full of gems, so here this thread goes 🙈
LaRose calling a list of *actual provisions* in HB294 “Dem talking points” is really somethin’ else. The bill will actually make it harder for BIPOC, students, rural, elderly, poor voters & those w disabilities to vote
Late addition to the Gov Oversight Cmtee schedule tmrw? SB 237, a new Stand Your Ground Bill.
Not scheduled for any hearings? SB 183 (backgrnd chks) or 184 (red flag) - both bipartisan and supported by Ohioans.
When folks demanded the OH Leg #DoSomething, it wasn’t to intro SYG
📣 Now what?
☎️ Cinci folks: call your state Sen. Johnson (614) 466-8082
☎️ Everyone else: call Cmtee Chair Sen. Coley to ask where the hearings are on SB 183, 184 -these bills will save lives, have bipartisan support, and are supported overwhelmingly by Ohioans (614)466-8072
A reminder: 90% of Ohioans support background checks and a majority of us want *stricter* laws on gun access.
SYG laws are quite the opposite. The reintro of this bill (as the others stall) is exactly why we need #FairMaps - our state leg isn’t moving bills voters want.
