Getting Hired at VMware
with @MarjASTEM @J0hnKjell and @poozza

VMware hiring pipeline is a DE&I's dream

🧵 Let's recap in this thread
Do you need VMware certifications to get the job?

No. Certs could shortlist you for very specific roles, though if you do need a cert, you can obtain them after being hired.

Other certs like AWS, Azure and GCP could be a plus for specific roles.

What kind of roles are available at VMware?
Basically everything. To name a few

Software Development
Program Managers
Technical Accounts Managers
Solutions Architect

Give the search with "Cloud" a try and take a look :

When looking for a role, make sure you have a good fit based on the job description for the responsibilities.

There is flex for requirements so don't sweat the 5+ years experience, Comp Sci degrees. That's just boilerplate.
Getting a referral can greatly increase your odds of landing a role at VMware.

Find an employee in your area, at your local meetups, you can cold call, do some friendship building before your ask.
No referral, there's lots of onramps:

Are projects on your resume going to factor in the interview hiring process? Greatly varies per role:

@MarjASTEM looks at presentation, communication skills, projects aren't a factor

@poozza looks at projects, are a factor

@john looks at Github code. Code quality are a factor
How's the culture?
VMWare is all about Mentors, not bosses.

People talking about dating a company, well VMware might just make you settle down and get married lol.

So much opportunity to internally change and advance roles

VMware has non-technical roles like Program Manager and Professional Services, so you can start in a non-technical and then transition into a technical role internally.

@ssennettau asks what if you're neurodiverse and you're applying?

VMware has a Neurodiversity inclusion Program.

TIL on #100DaysOfCloud Twitter Spaces with @DonReamey and @lounecl about Getting Hired at Microsoft / Azure

(rt to enter eBook draw)

🧵summary thread
1/ Microsoft and Azure are the same company. In terms of the hiring process, it is generally the same between these two organizations for similar roles. eg. Software Developer Engineer (SDE)

A Hiring Manager's technical challenges can greatly vary
/2 Microsoft and Azure Certifications at least for the Software Developer Engineer (SDE) are not a factor during hiring.

Consider whether the role is working on the underlying infrastructure or building workloads ontop of Microsoft services
