Born to a wealthy Southern family, privately educated, he served in WW1, age 19-21, from 1917-19, and used his experience and training in his acting career. He appeared in many film genres, but of his films, over 60 were Westerns.
After WW1, his ambition as pro footballer was dashed by a back injury. He tried various jobs, but in 1927 went to LA, armed with his father's letter of introduction to Howard Hughes, which got him a part in Sharp Shooters (1928).
He met Cary Grant in 1932, they soon rented a beach house together in Malibu, not unusual for the time, (Errol Flynn and David Niven shared a house too). But there still remains speculation whether their relationship was romantic?
