With skulduggery Congress ratifies the provisional leadership with legislator Jorge Calix as president. Calix promised to support Xiomara Castro's agenda, despite split with Libre Party. #Honduras
Last night, Congress called for a session at 7 am in the legislature, but this morning a second call was put out for a session outside Tegucigalpa at 8:20 am, which began minutes later. Legislators who planned to vote for Luis Redondo were trapped in Tegucigalpa.
Legislators who planned to vote for Calix, including dissident Libre, National Party & Liberal Yanistas appeared at the secret location & proceeded to vote, electing Calix. Those stuck in Tegucigalpa then held vote & elected Redondo, but were far short of a majority.

1/The battle for control of Congress in Honduras has devolved into complete chaos after a group of 20 legislators from Libre split from the party line & joined with the National Party and Yanistas of the Liberal Party to elect the provisional leadership of Congress.
2/Prior to the election, Libre made a pact with Salvador Nasralla’s PSH party that would concede the presidency of Congress to PSH regardless of how many seats each party won. The math was always difficult, with 65 votes needed for a majority.
3/Libre won 50 seats, PSH 10 and there were 4 dissident Liberals who had supported Xiomara Castro’s candidacy instead of their own party’s candidate. In the best-case scenario, they needed to find one more vote to honor the pact and elect the leadership of Congress.

Ahí encontró a hombres armados.

1/Honduras holds its primary elections today, the results of which are not expected for days. The vote comes at a tumultuous time, as a number of the candidates have been mentioned over the past week in a NY drug trafficking case. Here’s what’s at stake:
2/Besides deciding upon candidates, the parties participating in the vote want to show strength. In 2017, voter participation was down overall, but the National Party (PN), somewhat miraculously, jumped 20% despite not having a contentious primary.
3/The ruling PN is the most disciplined, well-oiled & financed machine and has the largest “voto duro,” or loyal vote. Part of that is due to hundreds of thousands of public employees whose jobs depend on the party’s continuance. Unchecked clientelism is another factor.
