McDonald's panic is understandable: for pseudo-progressives closet-imperialists, "decolonisation" of cultures like India must not uproot the networks of influence, left behind in colonies that allows the ex-colonial to try and manipulate the ex-colonized to its own advantage.
McDonald's two very Brit concerns are amusingly revealing and wd have done a Churchill honour, Nehru was the good "British" guy, whose one fault was appearing for INA undertrials: well he had no option, if he and INC wanted to retain any political legitimacy in people's eyes.
McDonald knows Nehru was a political chameleon: and she should not berate Nehru, who perfectly fit McDonald's "the good Indian" model as he had before independence promised to take a sword fight Bose and his INA if he entered India.
McDonald, if honest and authentic in her knpwledge of the reality of the social and political context of INA trials, surely knows that INC and Nehru realized the mood of the country, saw the demonstrations, and cashed in out of both sheer opportunism and political necessity.
McDonald's ultimate internal trigger is most revealing in how she makes the Indian "faithful" soldiers fighting on "Burma" somehow "disserviced" if INA and Bose is exalted. The empire still runs in the veins of all the sanctimonious preaching to keep Indians "faithful" to thugs.
The thinly suppressed arrogance behind such remarks is that same looking down on subjugated peoples by thugs - people who cannot be tolerated to honour their own heroes whom they see as not having compromised or collaborated with the scum scoundrel invader.
