A simple tip to DOUBLE the number of books you'll read this year:
This tip is called have a Snack & Meal book. ๐๐ฝ๏ธ
Here's how it works:
Think about your food appetite for a second...
Sometimes, you're super hungry or have lots of time and want a big meal to fill you up (like steak and potatoes).
Other times, you're only slightly hungry or short on time and want something small to snack on (like an apple).
Your reading appetite should work the same way...
You want to adjust what you READ based on how much energy you have just how you adjust what you EAT based on how hungry you are.
So if you're low on time/energy, have a Snack book.
But if you have lots of time/energy, have a Meal book.
Here's how to know which is which:
Snack books tend to be more entertaining, simple to understand, and overall easier to read.
Meal books tend to be information-dense, more complex, and require periods of deep thinking.
Here are a few examples of Snack & Meal books:
Snack books can be read on the go, when you're tired, or when you only have a few free mins.
Think:
โขย Light non-fiction books like "Make Your Bed."
โข Parable/fable books like "The Go-Giver."
โขย Quote books/books that can be read 1 page at a time like "A Calendar of Wisdom."
Meal books require lots of time, energy, and focus to read and digest.
Think:
โข STEM or information-dense books like "Sapiens."
โข Deep philosophy or psychology books like "12 Rules for Life."
โขย Classic literature books like "War & Peace."
So if you have a short commute or are tired after a long day at work, read a Snack book.
If you had an easy day or it's the weekend and want something to challenge you and keep you busy for quite some time, read a Meal book.
2 Common Snack & Meal book combos I've noticed over the years:
1) A fiction book you read to relax (Snack) & a non-fiction book about a skill you want to develop (Meal).
2) An audiobook you listen to while driving (Snack) & a physical book you write in while at home (Meal).
The secret is to adjust what you read based on how much energy you have.
So:
โข If you're low on time/energy, read a Snack book.
โขย If you have lots of time/energy, read a Meal book.
This way you'll always have something to read regardless of you're mood or situation.
Follow this tip and I guarantee you'll read 2x more books this year.
Now tell me, what's your Snack & Meal book?
