#InternationalHolocaustRemembranceDay I want acknowledge that part of my dedicated interests in traditional Jewish foodways drew inspiration from Joan Nathan's recipe adaptation of the Beigel family challah. Its my favorite and it was saved by a family decimated in the Shoah.
So for me, I understood what it meant to grasp onto these culinary memories because they represented people and life beyond trauma. People living from day to day. It was this inner dialogue that fertilized my work interpreting the food and lives of the American enslaved.
u know, this isn't a brag. Its hard to confess that u are already complete but u also feel this urge to belong& share&adapt&be a part of something only exceptional when practiced right--America. The jewelry, the prize is to tell the story better than when it was told to u.
If u can show ppl how the Ancestors ate, cooked, procured, derived food, you can show people they truly existed. Then you can look their deniers in the face while the okra or kugel or chocho or bimuelos confess our existence and loves...you can't erase hearts and stomachs.
I'm not a reenactor. I'm a resister. I don't enjoy the world of enslavement, the Shoah,Jim Crow or pogroms. But the ppl who criticize me don't get it. This isn't a hobby.I'm an old soul.A gilgul.I've been here.I'm goaded on by the desire to do remember and resist.

I want to thank Chloe from GWU...but....wow.. @mimva@MuseumLara@HistoryGonWrong@old_line_plate get ready 1. This is not an "outrage," tweet. 2. Those of u who know my work interpreting the food culture of the enslaved know how important this is to me.
3.are you ready for this?
Whats wrong with this picture? 1. He had enslaved labor& indentured Scotsmen doing his gardening until retirement. 2. James Hemings, was a young master chef. A "bright mulatto," who shared a father with Jefferson's wife. 3. Jefferson only entered the kitchen to change the clock.
Hey everyone...important notice. A thread: We have been in contentious times for a while. I know some if u vigorously disagree w/each other. I don't cosign 100% on other people's stuff just bc I follow them or them me. If you have an issue w/someone DM me rather than pull me in.
I have never gone into somebody's profile&done that to them. Its like being at a party&pulling someone on stage and saying, "And this is the company you keep? Explain yourself." You wouldn't do that in public but apparently its a tactic on here. I prefer DM if there's a problem.
One time someone shamed me out of unfollowing a local account bc they disagreed w/a post. "Why is Koshersoul following them?" "Whats going on with that?" It took me some time to realize that I was being policed& manipulated...not everyone does that, but its left a bad taste...
Ok but here's the real T....as a gay man....these are the same dudes who take on WASP performer names and spend 18-24 in groups just as large "frollicking" in front of a camera and those that don't go the only fans route so cut the queerphobia sis. @cmclymer she tried it.
One of the things that the enslaving culture never got over was an African that could read, but even worse was an African that could write. The current war against Black literature and Black writers is just an unresolved sickness from the Antebellum past. But fascism is futile.
Its not just the books, its a Michael W Twitty who read The Bluest Eye and Sula and Beloved and The Color Purple and Giovanni's Room many other works and found a path. I learned about spaces and universes where I was possible and Central and like Milkman, I could fly.
How does someone like me experience #Antisemitism ?
Anti-Jewish sentiments and behavior can reflect the different variants of people expressing their displeasure with Jews as a people, sub-ethnicities and as a set of religious practices or cultural or social stances.
Wearing a kippa, having a beard or wearing tzitzit...or fringes intended to remind me to observe the commandments often signify my Jewishness but that's not the only way people might identify me as a Jew and treat me differently in a negative way.
I was slapped in a grocery store by a man who grinned as he said "oh sorry didn't see you there..." and my kippa fell off. I was so shocked I didn't know what to do.
PLEASE STOP SAYING SOUL FOOD CAME FROM WHITE PEOPLE'S SCRAPS.
It's a complete lie that robs us of our agency, ownership, creativity and resistance and shows a lack of critical thinking and cultural literacy.
Damn, I wrote a 400 page book about this with 350 books in the bib.
🤬🤬
Really, them 6 white folks in the big house gave their 40 enslaved laborers some biscuit ends and a wing tip and was like...be grateful and work a 12-16 hour day tomorrow?
Black people actually revolted over food more than once. Stop the armchair history fakelore.
I've been to eight West African nations and btw intestines, livers, hearts, skin, feet, heads are happily consumed by everybody.
European medievalists can chime in here, but the idea of scraps from the master of the land is very pre-modern Europe.
