Today is day 2,000 since I was paralyzed. I cannot begin to tell you how much those 2,000 days have changed and restricted, challenged and harmed me. The way disabled people are treated in America is absolutely criminal, yet we are THE largest minority at 81M people. ♿🧵
The crushing lack of services and access makes every day a struggle--most of it unnecessary. Disabled people are victimized: More than half of all police shootings are of disabled people. Disabled women are 70% more likely to be raped.Most disabled people live in poverty. ♿🧵

literally,as we're the most food insecure of any group. The ADA was signed into law in 1990 yet about 75% of businesses remain inaccessible and access to other accomodations is also limited. Discrimination is rampant. 🧵

So on this grim milestone for me, I would like you to think about how everyone has at least one person with a visible or invisible disability in their family and friend group and ask you to fight for them and their civil rights to equity and access like your own. TYVM ♿🧵
I would add to this thread ♿ 🧵 that people with disabilities are all races and ethnicities, all genders, all religions or none, came originally from all economic strata but nearly inevitably became poor, have all manner of education and live everywhere,including on the streets.
Everyone is just one accident or medical procedure gone awry or genetic time bomb going off or aging or brain chemistry changing or COVID diagnosis away from disability. So if you read this thread and think it could never apply to you? Watch that kid's toy on the step. ♿🧵
