The Light Has Gone Out

" Friends and Comrades,

The light has gone out of our lives and there is darkness everywhere. I do not know what to tell you and how to say it. Our beloved leader, Bapu as we called him, the Father of the Nation, is no more.

(1/n).
Perhaps I am wrong to say that. Nevertheless, we will never see him again as we have seen him for these many years. We will not run to him for advice and seek solace from him, and that is a terrible blow, not to me only, but to millions and millions in this country.

(2/n).
And it is a little difficult to soften the blow by any other advice that I or anyone else can give you.

The light has gone out, I said, and yet I was wrong. For the light that shone in this country was no ordinary light.

(3/n).
The light that has illumined this country for these many years will illumine this country for many more years, and a thousand years later, that light will be seen in this country and the world will see it and it will give solace to innumerable hearts.

(4/n).
For that light represented something more than the immediate past, it represented the living, the eternal truths, reminding us of the right path, drawing us from error, taking this ancient country to freedom.

(5/n).
All this has happened when there was so much more for him to do. We could never think that he was unnecessary or that he had done his task. But now, particularly, when we are faced with so many difficulties, his not being with us is a blow most terrible to bear.

(6/n).
A madman has put an end to his life, for I can only call him mad who did it, and yet there has been enough of poison spread in this country during the past years and months, and this poison has had an effect on people’s minds.

(7/n).
We must face this poison, we must root out this poison, and we must face all the perils that encompass us, and face them not madly or badly, but rather in the way that our beloved teacher taught us to face them.

(8/n).
The first thing to remember now is that none of us dare misbehave because he is angry.

(9/n).
We have to behave like strong and determined people, determined to face all the perils that surround us, determined to carry out the mandate that our great teacher and our great leader has given us, remembering always that if,

(10/n).
as I believe, his spirit looks upon us and sees us, nothing would displease his soul so much as to see that we have indulged in any small behaviour or any violence.

(11/n).
So we must not do that. But that does not mean that we should be weak, but rather that we should, in strength and in unity, face all the troubles that are in front of us.

(12/n).
We must hold together, and all our petty troubles and difficulties and conflicts must be ended in the face of this great disaster. A great disaster is a symbol to us to remember all the big things of life and forget the small things of which we have thought too much.

(13/n).
In his death he has reminded us of the big things of life, the living truth, and if we remember that, then it will be well with India.

(14/n).
May I now tell you the programme for tomorrow? It was proposed by some friends that Mahatmaji’s body should be embalmed for a few days to enable millions of people to pay their last homage to him.

(15/n).
But it was his wish, repeatedly expressed, that no such thing should happen, that this should not be done, that he was entirely opposed to any embalming of his body,& so we decided that we must follow his wishes in this matter, however much others might have wished otherwise.

And so the cremation will take place on Saturday in Delhi city by the side of the Jamuna River. On Saturday forenoon, about 11.30 a.m., the bier will be taken out at Birla House and it will follow a prescribed road and go to the Jamuna River.

(17/n).
The cremation will take place there at about 4 p.m. The place and the route will be announced by radio and the Press.

People in Delhi who wish to pay their last homage should gather along this route.

(18/n).
I will not advise too many of them to come to Birla House, but rather to gather on both sides of this long route from Birla House to the Jamuna River. And I trust that they will remain there in silence without any demonstrations.

(19/n).
That is the best way and the most fitting way to pay homage to this great soul. Also, Saturday should be a day of fasting and prayer for all of us.

(20/n).
Those who live elsewhere, out of Delhi and in other parts of India, will no doubt take such part as they can in this last homage. For them also, let this be a day of fasting and prayer.

(21/n).
And at the appointed time for cremation, that is 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, people should go to the river or to the sea and offer prayers there.

(22/n).
And while we pray, the greatest prayer that we can offer is to take a pledge to dedicate ourselves to the truth, and to the cause for which this great countryman of ours lived and for which he has died.

(23/n).
That is the best prayer that we can offer him and his memory. That is the best prayer we can offer to India and ourselves.

A Glory That is No More

" Sir, may I associate with what you have said? It is customary in this House to pay some tribute to the eminent departed, to say some words of praise and condolence.

(1/n).
I am not quite sure in my own mind if it is exactly fitting for me or for any others of this House to say much on this occasion for I have a sense of utter shame both as an individual and as head of the government of India that

(2/n).
we should have failed to protect the greatest treasure we possessed. It is our failure in the past many months, to give protection to many an innocent man, woman and child.

" Communalism is neither good religion nor good politics. Communalism has caused damage to the country in the past.

(1/n).
Therefore, we must understand that all those who live in this country, irrespective of their religion and the province to which they belong,

(2/n).
have eq ual rights and that suppression of any one of them by the others, by law or by tradition, is wrong because it harms the nation and weakens it. So the basic policies we may formulate , is the unity of the country, regional and religious unity."~Jawaharlal Nehru

" When I talk about an independent foreign policy for India, other people talk about the neutral attitude of India. I object to the word "neutral" . We are not neutral.

(1/n).
We have positive ideas . When we talk of an independent foreign policy for India, some countries criticize it and do not understand it. They ask " what is this"? Yet, in the final analysis, what does an independent policy for India mean?

(2/n).
It means refusal to be pushed about by others this way or that way. It means deciding what you want to do yourself.

"Communal organisations are the clearest example of extreme narrowness of outlook, strutting about in the guise of nationalism. In the name of unity, they separate and destroy. In social terms they represent the reaction of the worst type.

(1/n).
We may condemn these communal organisations, but there are many others who are not free from this narrow influence.

(2/n).
Oddly enough, the very largeness of India, which is a word in itself , tends to make the people living in it complacent, rather ignorant of the rest of the world, and narrow minded. We have to contend against these forces."~Jawaharlal Nehru.

"...I see also something that pains me greatly. I see poverty. I see little children, the lovely and beautiful children of India, without food, sometimes without clothing, without proper shelter, education and health care,

(1/n).
and I feel very angry if even one single child of India should suffer so. Every child of India has a right to demand that the necessities of life should be given to it, that a full opportunity of growing up properly must be provided for.

(2/n).
Looking at this picture, I grow impatient and a little angry at myself and others, that we progress so slowly. Why can we not tackle these problems of poverty and unemployment more speedily?

"In India, there are differences in several aspects. But I see India here in its amazing diversity, in its richness, and also in its amazing unity.

(1/n).
I want you to keep and preserve this rich diversity, and I also want to lay great emphasis on the essential unity.

(2/n).
For India is like a rich cloth or tapestry woven by threads which make it strong, and also rich in colour. We must not do anything to weaken the texture of the fabric of India."__Jawaharlal Nehru.
