BBM, COCAINE ADDICTION, AND FILIPINO LOGIC

In anthropology we also study how humans think—ethnic philosophy, nativist logic, local thinking, tribal thought, etc. How we use our Minds, after all, is shaped by our society and culture. Yes, Filipinos have their own way of thinking.
Perhaps you have experienced this scenario: you want your visitor to leave, so you tell him it'll be raining soon or you're going somewhere or anything other than being direct—"You should leave now". Filipino minds are used to indirect thinking--pahapyaw, pasaring, or parinig.
Another one is linear thinking, a different kind. Filipino's number one pastime is gossip. The initial talk is about an egg, and a few days or tsismosos and tsismosas later, the talk turns into a full narrative—maybe about an omelet, chicken or adobo. We rely on what is possible.
Filipinos also have circular thinking that's best described by this saying: "Sa hinaba-haba ng prusisyon, sa simbahan din ang tuloy". In English it's beating around the bush. Filipinos say Tallano Gold, Yamashita Treasure, etc. The ultimate end is the beginning—ill-gotten wealth.
We also have skeptical thinking. Even Filipino kids know this adage: to see is to believe. Filipinos are so used to this thinking that they become victims of the budol-budol gang. They use their eyes, not their minds. A glittering bar of gold above a stack of bricks is enough.
The last one I can think of is pop-up thinking. In Filipino, this is mema—merong masabi. A good example is how anti-Robredo Filipino use lutang, lugaw, bobo, and tanga because they have nothing to say about her politics and her qualities as a politician. Basta merong masabi lang.
Now, let's apply indirect, linear, circular, skeptical or pop-up thinking to truthful propaganda Filipinos can understand easily because it's their logic. Let's use Marcos' cocaine addiction that should be widely spread since it's about social justice and cognitive impairment.
Duterte already did the indirect thinking for us. He exposed Marcos' drug addiction without naming him, but Filipinos knew who that was—Marcos. Remember, they are used to indirect thinking. That's why blind items are the thing in Philippine media because they exploit our logic.
We can use linear thinking to complete what Duterte started. A drug addict isn't a good leader or president. He'll just cause too much chaos. He won't perform his duties well. He'll bankrupt the government. He'll borrow money left and right. Think Duterte, another drug addict.
Marcos' cocaine addiction is difficult to assail, rebut, erase, or stifle. They can justify the effects of cocaine on his face and brain with a list of reasons, but in the end, Duterte's revelation, the beginning, will remain a bombshell. Remember, Duterte is their trusted tatay.
Skeptical thinking is perfect as far as the cocaine addict propaganda is concerned. Filipinos are visual. They see his coke jaw, rapid blinking, jarring stutter, droopy face, and other signs they see on other addicts. All we have to do is remind and bombard them with his images.
We should expect pop-up thinking to come from Marcos' camp. His handlers and supporters will say black propaganda, negative campaigning, effects of covid-19 or anything just to respond. In truth, they can't silence the truthful accusation. His face and thought disorder are proof.
His addiction isn't just about his ruined face and cognitive impairment, but also social justice or equality. Too many addicts have been killed already, yet Marcos is still alive. Money, influence, and power? Poor Filipinos should be incited by invoking Marcos and anti-poor EJK.
Done.

GROUPPINK: ECHOES AND CHAMBERS

The 2022 Presidential Election is fast approaching, yet most Kakampinks are still comfortable in their giant echo chamber, enjoying nauseating echoes and fortifying their exclusive minichambers. This thread will explore grouppink--pink groupthink.
Exclusive power and political xenophobia have always been the core of Dilawan politics. They were observable during Cory's and Noynoy's terms--too many K's: kaibigan, kaklase, kakilala, kapamilya, kasosyo, kakampi, kasama, etc. They weren't really open to outsiders and unknowns.
Duterte has practiced exclusive power and political xenophobia too, and he is the worst--Davao group, fraternity brothers, Chinese friends, Tsinoy aides, etc. The only difference is that they let outsiders and unknowns join his government, but with limits and demarcation lines.

ADDICT BEHAVIOR AS A PARADIGM FOR GOVERNANCE

In this thread, I'll focus on Duterte's public policy that mirrors the typical behavior of a drug addict. By public policy, I mean the set of actions adopted by the government—laws, plans, goals, programs, rules, projects, funds, etc.
If you ask the family of a drug addict about the latter's contribution to his household, you'll get depression, chaos, anxiety, destruction, fear, insecurity, hopelessness, conflict, pain, and what have you. What Duterte has done to Filipinos is what an addict does to his family.
Yes, there are murderous addicts. Their drug-induced paranoia makes them kill. Isn't Duterte murderous? Isn't he paranoid? Isn't he an addict? Isn't EJK his masterpiece? I do believe he's an addict. After all, he knows about Fentanyl, and he's neither a doctor nor a pharmacist.

COWARDICE AND BRAVERY FROM CRADLE TO GRAVE

The interplay between karuwagan (cowardice) and katapangan (bravery) is the recurring narrative in the life of a Filipino from the time he is born until his last breath on a flat surface. Cowardice is always castigated and humiliated.
Pregnancy is an existential battle among Filipino parents, and the womb of a woman is viewed as an unpredictable place--almost like a boxing ring. Strong fetuses cling to life, their survival, while the weak ones let go of themselves, miscarriage. Those fetuses are labeled early.
Childbirth is the first struggle of a Filipino, especially in rural areas where traditional midwives' effort is prone to infection and complicated delivery. "Lumaban ka, anak" (fight, my child) is the desperate line expected from worried parents who view surviving as a struggle.

HOW GROUPISM IS DESTROYING PHILIPPINE SOCIETY

Bayanihan, akbayan, pakikitungo, and pakikipagkapwa are groupist, and they promote social positivism. Filipinos organize into a collective to promote cohesion, fairly distribute scarce resources, take care of each other, and survive.
Groupism is defined as "the tendency to conform to the general thinking and behavior of a group", the opposite of "the pursuit of individual rather than common or collective interests"—individualism, which is often associated with ambition, greed, inequality, and yes, capitalism.
If unexamined or at first glance, groupism is good since it promotes social positivity and collectively aims for the betterment or welfare of many, but this positive groupism has a tendency to evolve into bandwagonism, groupthinking, cultic belongingness, and oppressive mobbing.

THE REACTIONARY READING COMPREHENSION OF FILIPINOS

English isn't the only reason behind the poor reading comprehension of Filipinos. Even when a text uses Filipino, their lingua franca, their reading comprehension is still poor. Their reactionary reading is one of the culprits.
By reactionary, I mean two things: overreaction to anything without calm examination and hostile reaction to something that isn't comfortably familiar. We see this reactionary reading and comprehension in politics, in cultural discourse, and even in mundane chats on social media.
I tweeted recently about the positive representation of transwomen by exposing the achievers and the social shakers among them in the media. The reactions I got brought me back to my high school days when I first encountered Barthes, the purveyor of authorial absence in texts.

Siguro may manunulat pang sumali. Puwede ring may bihasa sa social psychology. Mahahalata ang husay at galing sa makikita. 'Yong pinag-isipan, pinag-usapan, at pinagdebatehan pa siguro.
