Thread: Whoopi Goldberg's lack of education concerning racism

The thing that bothers me the most about her many attempts at clarifying what she said, is that her attitude is just to accept what her critics have said that "corrects" her view.

That is so intellectually lazy.

I think Whoopi Goldberg said this to get the criticism to stop.

What we actually want her to do is spend at least 100 hours quietly studying the facts about the Holocaust and at least 100 hours quietly studying current academic definitions of racism in general.

I spent way more than that number of hours studying these topics in recent years. My reason was so that I could *understand* the issues more deeply & be able to have more informed independent thinking about them.

I'd wager many have done the same in the #BlackLivesMatter era.

I'm talking about understanding racism enough to recognize that no, racism is not limited to how a person looks to others. There are so many rebuttals to that idea, I hardly know where to begin.

The term people of color includes many diverse groups.

It's crucial to know that no one group under the POC umbrella is more "worthy" of basic human rights or civil rights than others.

People who became enslaved in Africa ended up becoming the ancestors of people now living in just about every country of the world, not just the US.

My heritage is as part of the former British Empire, and my family tree includes both investors in slaveholding corporations, and abolitionists in early 19th century London.

I accept both of these and I do the work of educating myself about the legacy of my ancestors.

In the current climate where literal fascists are closer than they have ever been to fully taking over the government of the USA, every possible resistance voter needs to unite with each other to stop them in the 2022 midterms. 2024 is too late.

Don't take anything for granted.

Someone else revealed their actual beliefs and intentions in the past week, too. And that is very helpful to all pro-democracy advocates.

When TFG called his NY, DC, and GA prosecutors racist, not enough people paid attention to that part of what he said. He literally and openly said that because some his current investigators/prosecutors happen to be Black, they must be racist to go after him, a white man.

I have yet to see any Republican public figure denounce what he did there. He cried racism against white people. Playing the victim card is normal for narcissists but what he said in total is even worse than that.

Willfully ignorant people like Whoopi Goldberg are all over, focusing on themselves and not the dire situation that American democracy itself is in.

It's time for everyone to unite behind the only viable opposition to the now unashamed fascists of the Republican party.

I can't support some of the policies of the Democratic party but right now that does not matter, at all.

The same goes for New Zealand, where I get a vote. The right wing parties here say that as someone at higher risk of severe Covid, I'm expendable in the name of their votes.

In the US right now there are only two options. Either you are willing to accept a fascist regime brought to power by incredibly stupid and anti-American Republican power brokers, or you're prepared to get working to stop them BEFORE the midterms later this year.

There is absolutely no excuse for not knowing that TFG's words & actions in the past week scream ongoing violent insurgency enabled by fascists embedded in law enforcement at all levels & national security / defense agencies.

Wake up. Then get to work.
