On a day like today, in 1689 Blas de Lezo was born, one of the most famous Spanish sailors in history, who defended Cartagena de Indias during the British siege in 1741.

His work has been widely recognized and thanked, but one of the most curious forms of gratitude, by the Colombian navy, was to name one of his American home ships after his name.

This was a "Mettawee" tanker originally named AOG-30 USS KALAMAZOO, and renamed in 1944 as the ARC Blas de Lezo (BT-62), once it was transferred to Colombian hands. This name lasted until 1965.

Su labor ha sido ampliamente reconocida y agradecida, pero una de las formas más curiosas de agradecimiento, por parte de la armada colombiana, fue otorgar el nombre de marino a uno de sus barcos de origen estadounidenses.

On a day like today, in 1669, the jesuit friar Diego Luis de San Vitores, erects Guam's first Catholic church of the Most Sweet Name of Mary.

The church faces Spain's square and its structure was erected by San Vitores with the help of the Chamours.

It was received with enthusiasm, as priest Enric Forbes explains in an interview to @PostGuam.

Unfortunately this church, which had been expanded in the 19th century with a bell tower and side chapel, was destroyed in 1944 by a bombing fire, during WWII.

#TalDíaComoHoy en 1669, el fraile jesuita Diego Luis de San Vitores, levanta la primera iglesia católica de Guam, llamada Dulce Nombre de María.

La iglesia está frente a la Pza. España y su estructura fue levantada por San Vitores con la ayuda de los chamorros.

Fue recibida con entusiasmo, como explica el sacerdote Enric Forbes en una entrevista a @PostGuam.

Desgraciadamente esta iglesia, que había sido ampliada en el siglo XIX con un campanario y una capilla lateral, fue destruida en 1944 por un bombardeo, durante la Segunda Guerra mundial.

The Valencian studied at the Escuela de Maestros de Obras in Barcelona (precedent of the @ETSABarcelona) and moved to New York in 1881, aged 39. He left a legacy of 1000 works around the U.S. and around 250 in the city that never sleeps.
