You may have heard the news about the fire in Chicago, a major financial hub in the United States and home base of Citadel Securities. If not, here is a link. I've done a little digging and have some experience in this. Tin foil hat time. (1/x)

As a meager retail store manager, we had fire safety inspections at least once a year with the fire marshall. We thoroughly inspected our sprinkler system for faults. All sprinkler heads were required to be at least 18" clearance from the next highest thing.

The sprinkler control system, even in the most basic of approved structures was required to be in a separate, fire-controlled, room. These were also inspected and tagged yearly. The water access had to enter through that room into the building.

One news article read that the shelving units fell and disabled the sprinkler system. This is not possible for many reasons. Pallet storage shelving units are required to have 2 hour UL ratings and fire protective coating. Example:

The news article linked above claimed that the roof fell, disabling the sprinkler system, which is entirely possible. However, the roof in these buildings are rated for 56 minutes of UL ratings. Keep in mind these are both rated at MUCH higher temps than burning paper.

This means that a massive fire would've been raging inside (with sprinklers operational and running) for at least an hour at overwhelming temperatures in order to collapse the roof. That is a ton of response time for fire fighters. I'm not an expert on that.

You can clearly see in the news reporting video that the massive shelving units, after more than 24 hours of fire, were toppled, bent, but still mainly intact. I'm sure an investigation will rule out the shelving angle easily.

So for this fire to rage for over an hour, starting at 9:45ish in the morning yesterday is fairly inconceivable, unless the fire was burning and no one reported it for some time. I know there were employees there, because they were evacuated safely, per the reporting.

Oh, I forgot to mention that this warehouse, reportedly, contained financial documents for Charles Scwabb and TD Ameritrade. That means this warehouse contained financial documents of interest to the current DOJ investigation into 60 Short Hedge Funds.

"Why would they need back up documents if everything is electronic?" Well, as a former bank manager, I can tell you that document control is very important. Electronic records can be altered and financial transactions of significant magnitude must be secured and reported.
