Quite apart from the extremely offensive analogy, she - and other women who share her view - completely misunderstand, or deliberately ignore, what gender critical feminists are arguing. Perhaps it will help if we look - yet again - at the root cause of this culture war
Feminism is based on the inarguable fact that women and girls across the world are oppressed because of their biological sex; the form that oppression takes depends on the culture of the society a woman lives in, FGM in Sudan, abortion ban in Texas…
Gender is the set of cultural stereotypes that any given society assigns to male and female. Pink and pouting for girls 🤦🏼♀️ anyone? Here’s UNICEF’s helpful definition of sex and gender
If a person is allowed to change their sex by self ID (root of current debate) then women’s rights based on our sex and how any particular culture treats us will be at risk. If gender constructs have more legal/political power than natal sex there’s no other logical conclusion
Gender critical feminists are not arguing against trans rights we’re standing up for rights of women across the world to organise, advocate and campaign for our sex-based rights and that includes pointing out when they are under threat, eg USA abortion bans or self ID in Scotland
In her article Marie describes us obsessive. Perhaps we are. But history teaches us that you can’t protect your rights unless you stand up for them #WomenWontWheesht
