⏰When the category was launched in the 1980s, the average length of a nominated song was four and a half minutes.

The contenders for Song of the Year at this year’s Brit Awards include:

🎵Easy On Me by Adele: 3:44
🎵Bad Habits by Ed Sheeran: 3:51

But those songs are relatively drawn out in comparison to other nominees in the category 👇

🎵Friday by Riton and Nightcrawlers: 2:49
🎵Latest Trends by A1 x J1: 2:38

Latest Trends, a debut single, went viral on TikTok after a 15-second snippet was used in thousands of videos before the full track was even released.

🍉Last year’s winner, Watermelon Sugar by Harry Styles, was also hugely popular on TikTok and lasts two minutes and 53 seconds

📀“Songs that are reduced in time are more favourable largely due to listener preferences, Spotify algorithms and the rise of social media platforms such as TikTok,” said a team of researchers from Harvard University

The trend for shorter singles means that music has come full circle.

Early pop and rock songs of the 1950s and 1960s also favoured brevity

📅The Beatles’ From Me To You came in at one minute and 56 seconds, one second shorter than All Shook Up by Elvis Presley
